The Opportunity
Our Energy Solutions – Ventures and Strategy team is currently seeking a Senior Financial Analyst to focus on low-carbon strategy and venture investments, based in Calgary, AB or Houston, TX.
Reporting to the Manager, Ventures and Strategy, this position will contribute towards the development, communication, implementation, and review of TC Energy’s various low carbon strategies as well as support the assessment and evaluation of potential technologies to supplement TCE’s decarbonization portfolio.
What you will do
- Perform economic evaluations on small-scale pilots and commercial projects focused on carbon capture and hydrogen energy solutions
- Identify key investment risks and benefits; propose commercial or structural alternatives to avoid or minimize risks while maximizing benefits and support the negotiations of project development agreements
- Support project development processes including coordinating key internal groups such as Engineering, Legal, Finance, Tax, Risk, IS, Environment and Accounting
- Conduct scenario and sensitivity analysis on a variety of technoeconomic assumptions and commercial structures to support capital investment decisions
- Assist in developing communication material and investment memorandums for internal executive audiences as well as external customers
- Lead the development and continued support of fundamentals-based financial and economic models in support of various carbon capture and hydrogen strategies
- Maintain signposts and metrics related to energy transition to help inform on the trajectory, scale, and pace of low-carbon technology and fuel adoption
- Support the origination and diligence activities of various emerging technologies alongside a cross functional team to augment a venture portfolio of potential decarbonization solutions
- Support venture portfolio management activities for a suite of investments including funds and direct investments
- Provide support to various portfolio companies in advancing piloting and commercial activities across the organization
Minimum Qualifications
- Post-Secondary Education in Business, Economics or other related discipline
- 6-10 years of related and progressive industry / business experience
- 4 years direct experience with financial modeling and planning
- Experience performing financial valuations as well as an understanding of the fundamental principles of economics, risk analysis, portfolio theory and accounting
- Proficient using MS Word, PowerPoint along with advanced Excel modeling skills
- Demonstrated strategic understanding of the natural gas and energy transition-related topics
Preferred Qualifications
- Proven knowledge and experience in low-carbon and energy-related topics, particularly in financial modeling and planning to support the development of emerging technologies such as hydrogen and carbon capture and storage
- Completion or active pursuit of a professional financial or business designation or program
- Ability to navigate ambiguity, apply systems and processes and simplify complex situations
- Proven ability to collect, gather, visualize and analyze information in detail, including clearly synthesizing and communicating the results
- Proficient in using think-cell or other presentation tools
This position requires candidates to:
- Have current, valid authorization to travel internationally (including but not limited to Canada, US and Mexico)
- Travel across North America to other company or supplier locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training (estimated up 10% of work schedule)
- Successfully complete pre-employment Bankruptcy, Credit, Civil and Criminal background checks (US Candidates)
