Job Description:
The Accountant I performs a variety of accounting functions for an assigned line(s) of business, and/or specialize in a particular accounting area(s) with technical accounting knowledge to give detailed and informed accounting opinions of assigned business activities.
Depth & Scope:
- Reviews monthly financial activity and ensures transactions are appropriately recorded in proper accounts, such as cost capitalizing vs. expensing. Researches discrepancies and makes corrections and updates as necessary
- Provides ongoing, proactive, specialized accounting advice and counsel to assigned lines of business to ensure clients are operating efficiently under applicable accounting rules and regulations
- Communicates and meets regularly with clients to develop an understanding of their business and to provide accounting insight, knowledge and expertise, such as improving accounting process flows or clarifying income and expense recognition practices
- Recognizes, identifies and investigates client accounting issues that need attention, researches as needed, offers accounting opinions based on research and knowledge and resolves problems
- Ensures client activities are in compliance with Company policies, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) regulations
- Ensures monthly recording of income, expense and other financial transactions is accurate and timely
- Researches and determines proper accounting treatment for new products and services as needed and communicates complete, thorough and accurate accounting requirements
- Considers and explains risk management issues prior to implementation, such as determining how the accounting of new initiatives will be monitored and controlled
- Coordinates revisions to accounting policy manual for policies within areas of expertise
- Performs a variety of research and analysis after the monthly financial closing, including determining business line results, calculating profitability, researching variances, investigating transaction types and appropriateness and other analyses
- Maintains complete understanding of assigned accounts and the related accounting requirements
- Reviews account reconciliations, ensuring that the process is efficient, technically sound and complete and in compliance with applicable accounting guidelines and regulations; May prepare sensitive/complex reconciliations
- Creates, interprets and distributes variety of financial reports detailing monthly financial results; Summarizes results and answers questions as needed
- Reviews general ledger account activity on a regular basis and makes various journal entries as needed
- Analyzes accounting treatment of various transactions to ensure proper recording, including complex activities such as purchase accounting and amortization schedules for acquisitions
- Performs a variety of accounting functions on an entry-level basis. Requires supervision and oversight on a frequent basis; Exposure to routine transactions
Experience:
- Bachelors degree or progressive work experience
- 1+ Years of related experience.
- Fundamental accounting knowledge, including developing understanding of FASB and GAAP regulations, particularly in assigned line(s) of business or specialty area
- Curious and observant with willingness to investigate to understand details of assigned business lines/accounts
- Strong analytical and problem solving skills. Proactive, with ability to obtain necessary information and influence others in a tactful way without direct authority
- Relationship management skills, with ability to develop good client working relationships
- Communication skills, both verbal and written
