This key role will support all aspects of corporate accounting and financial reporting for Hartford Funds. Reporting to the firm's Controller, and acting as a "player / coach", the individual in this role will be responsible for oversight of accounting, banking, accounts payable/receivable, general ledger, and internal and external financial reporting. This position is also responsible for maintaining a robust internal control environment, conducting accounting research and setting and implementing standard accounting policies and procedures.

The Assistant Controller will play a significant role in the day-to-day operations and leadership of the Hartford Funds' Corporate Accounting team. With a focus on continuous improvement, the Assistant Controller will assist with optimizing financial data and operations across the entire accounting department.

WHAT ARE THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION?

  • Take ownership of the monthly closing and financial reporting processes to meet assigned deadlines, ensure accuracy, and provide key insights of results and trends.

  • Ensure that all general ledger balance sheet accounts are reconciled monthly with variances properly researched and resolved.

  • Lead the annual audit and financial statement preparation in accordance with GAAP.

  • Prepare quarterly and annual regulatory filings filed with FINRA and the SEC.

  • Lead accounting research and recommendations on the application of accounting standards under US GAAP; maintain a documented system of accounting policies and procedures.

  • Evaluate and maintain strong internal controls and identify opportunities to enhance process and controls to ensure continuing compliance.

  • Collaborate with technology resources on the continuous improvement agenda to improve data and enhance the department's systems and processes.

  • Coach and develop the team beyond their tasks to ensure a strong understanding of the business, accounting standards, financial analysis, process efficiency, and relationship-building. Create personal development plans and set clear performance expectations.

  • Collaborate with other teams, such as Finance, to provide transparency of actual results, including analysis of trends, metrics, and key drivers; and ensure accounting data is reflected accurately in planning and forecasting tools.

  • Review unusual and non-recurring business transactions to confirm proper accounting treatment and advise senior management accordingly.

  • Lead ad hoc analyses, including projects and requests from external stakeholders, Chief Financial Officer, Corporate Controller, and other internal customers.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
  • Bachelor's Degree in Accounting and CPA required, MBA or Master's degree is a plus
  • Approximately 10 years of business experience. Financial services or asset management experience required.
  • Ability to obtain FINRA Series 27 within a reasonable time
  • Public accounting experience required, mix of public and private industry experience is a plus
  • Strong understanding of GAAP
  • Ability to effectively lead a collaborative team
  • Strong organization, analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to manage and prioritize multiple responsibilities and deadlines
  • Ability to effectively present ideas and solutions in a logical and articulate manner with the ability to work effectively with and influence Senior Executives
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Results oriented, accountable, motivated and flexible
  • Excellent presentation skills, both written and verbal
  • Proactive and results-oriented player who wants to help build a high performing team

Compensation

The listed annualized base pay range is primarily based on analysis of similar positions in the external market. Actual base pay could vary and may be above or below the listed range based on factors including but not limited to performance, proficiency and demonstration of competencies required for the role. The base pay is just one component of The Hartford's total compensation package for employees. Other rewards may include short-term or annual bonuses, long-term incentives, and on-the-spot recognition. The annualized base pay range for this role is:

$150,000 - $175,000
