The Role:

To manage the day-to-day UK VAT affairs of the Corporation of Lloyd's by: taking responsibility for the preparing and filings of VAT returns and providing technical support to the other functions of the Corporation; being the go-to contact for the Corporation on any VAT issues and queries (including overseas offices); supporting the Corporation on VAT aspects of cross-directorate projects; ensuring the Corporation is compliant with its risk and governance requirements.

Principal Accountabilities:
  • Act as principal preparer of the Corporation's quarterly VAT returns.
  • Act as principal preparer of the Corporation's other UK VAT compliance obligations, including the annual adjustment and capital goods scheme adjustment.
  • Provide VAT support and advice to other departments on VAT issues, queries and cross-directorate projects.
  • Provide VAT/GST support and advice to overseas offices where required.
  • Maintain VAT procedures and other key controls within the VAT risk and governance framework.
  • Liaise with HMRC and on VAT-related issues and queries.
  • Support with lobbying and industry group representation on VAT issues which impact the Corporation.

Skills, Knowledge and Experience
  • Strong data analytic skills and excellent attention to detail;
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate tax-technical issues to a non-tax audience;
  • Ability to work independently with guidance only on complex issues and organise and prioritise own work;
  • Ability to work as part of a team and liaise with other departments and external contacts;
  • Ability to analyse changes in legislation and assess impact of changes on Lloyd's;
  • Proactive attitude toward identifying issues and recommending solutions based on initiative, experience and understanding of procedures;
  • Confidence to challenge information provided and to use initiative especially in dealing with areas of ambiguity;
  • Consultative approach and the ability to manage conflicting views.
  • Solid and broad knowledge of relevant VAT/GST regimes (in particular UK).
  • Good knowledge of partial exemption essential.
  • Solid and broad grounding in UK VAT from a compliance perspective

Professional Qualifications
  • Accountancy or tax qualification required, e.g. ACCA, ACA or CTA. However, not essential if candidate can prove they have experience equivalent to this and can operate at the same level.
