We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Senior Manager, Climate Change.
Principal Responsibilities
Role purpose
- This is a regional role within the Global Sustainability function, with a larger proportion of focus on Hong Kong market
- Global Sustainability supports HSBC to achieve its ambition to be the leading bank for the transition to net-zero by financing the urgent transition to a net zero economy, enabling an inclusive and just transition, and unlocking climate solutions and innovations
- The role main responsibility is to support Global and Regional Sustainability leadership in driving the climate agenda. The role holder will need to act as advisor and enabler to Business and Functions in implementing HBAP Climate Strategy, as well as support the commercialisation of net zero transition in Asia Pacific
- The role holder will work closely with Global Sustainability colleagues at Group, Regional, and Country/market level. He/she will also work closely with other stakeholders in Business and Function. The role will be based in Hong Kong
- Governance and Committee Memberships
- Secretariat role in the Regional Sustainable Finance Committee with the objective to minimise greenwashing risks and enable adoption of best practices in labelled sustainable finance
- Share appropriate inputs at HSBC sustainability policy and governance forums at Regional and Hong Kong level, especially on net zero, climate strategy and sustainable finance, as required
- Drive the implementation of HBAP Climate Strategy by working closely with Businesses and Functions, as well as with Group and Sustainability teams in countries/markets in Asia Pacific (ASP)
- Serve as the go-to subject matter expert in ASP on net zero transition, especially in the context of the financial sector in the region for both Group and Regional Business and Functions
- Support accountable executives in the Region and Hong Kong on key sustainability and climate-related external engagements and internal policy interpretations and implementation
- Working with Regional Businesses on client transition plan engagement, supporting clients in developing a credible transition plan, as well as business development by identifying net zero transition commercialisation opportunities
- Working with Group Sustainability and regional stakeholders to strengthen subject-matter capacity and capability across ASP region and strategically position HSBC thought leadership capabilities to support client engagement and policy advocacy goals
- Demonstrate HSBC values and courageous leadership
- Empower and create employee / team engagement
- Commitment to teamwork and proactive dialogue with ASP Business, Functions and Group Sustainability team
- Be a strong thought leader and advocate for transition to net zero
- Minimum 8 years of experience in the areas of sustainability and/or sustainable finance
- University degree or equivalent and relevant academic qualifications in sustainability
- In depth understanding of sustainability and transition to net zero in the context of banking and financial institution in Asia Pacific, especially Hong Kong
- Commercial acumen to integrate sustainability proposition into banking and financial services
- Possess knowledge in one or more topics essential to realizing HSBC's climate ambition. This includes but is not limited to:
- Sustainable finance and climate-aligned finance
- Renewable energy
- Fossil fuels and carbon-intensive sector decarbonisation
- Nature, such as biodiversity, deforestation, nature-based solutions
- Carbon markets
- Knowledge of HSBC Commercial Banking and Global Banking and Markets products and services. Prior experience in frontline role a strong advantage
- Ability to network and foster key internal and external relationships to drive HSBC's climate ambition, including delivery of climate strategy and capability building
- Strong verbal and written communication skills across cultures, seniority and lines of business and function
- Growth mindset with thirst of learning and ability to grasp new concepts and share knowledge at the appropriate level of detail to engage different audience
- Good project management and analytical skills
- Cantonese and/or Mandarin skills a strong advantage
