We are looking for an individual to help drive forward Markel International's Actuarial Pricing team - project work around case pricing, tool development and M&A activities as well as setting goals, managing resource, prioritising work and reviewing key deliverables.

The opportunity:

We are a team of 31 that provide actuarial support to the International organisation, covering multiple geographical locations. The team is mainly based in London, but can operate remotely or other offices. We interact with almost all of the other departments as well as colleagues in the US and in other worldwide locations. We travel as necessary, particularly for office visits and conferences (both internally and externally).

As an Actuarial Director of Pricing, you'll contribute significantly to all aspects of the Markel International Actuarial team that relate to pricing and profitability, including large account pricing, pricing tool validation and internal and regulatory pricing reporting.

What you'll be doing:
  • Oversee the analysis of the profitability of product lines and individual accounts, design pricing tools for both actuarial and underwriter use, validate rating structures and provide insight to support the profitability and growth of various books of business.
  • Assist in assessing underwriting plans and their impact on forward looking profitability assessments.
  • Help draft Solvency II Opinions (Opinion on Reinsurance Arrangements and Opinion of Underwriting Policy) and liaise with the capital modelling team to ensure parameterisation is appropriate and business focussed.
  • Utilise available statistical data to establish reliable and accurate estimates of the risk, using the most appropriate actuarial techniques.
  • Build staff capable of effectively carrying out assignments and specific goals and recommending effective personal actions when needed.
  • Evaluate procedures and practices and implementing changes to improve workflow.
  • Communicate actuarial results with actuaries and non-actuaries in a clear and concise manner.
  • Document processes, assumptions and methodologies, and results of actuarial analysis.

Our must-haves:
  • Have substantial experience of technical pricing, including case pricing large accounts and rating model development
  • Have experience of portfolio management monitoring and development of associated metrics
  • Have experience in the actuarial elements of business planning and parameterisation of underwriting risk, including interacting with other departments including Finance, Underwriting, Capital etc.
  • Be able to manage and engage senior stakeholders and create effective relationships with stakeholders
  • Be aware of the latest market practice and developments in the field of pricing and portfolio management
