Job Description

The trading analyst provides timely and accurate verification, analysis and reporting of physical and financial transaction data, calculates profit and loss on optimization and hedging activities and serves as a liaison to corporate accounting, internal audit, energy management accounting and risk management departments regarding departmental financial and accounting issues.

The trading analyst develops analyses of fuel, energy and capacity supply and demand and market values, and is responsible for the development of energy trading, accounting and reporting systems and procedures to comply with internal and external requirements. Assists with daily trading and scheduling activity to ensure supply reliability, avoidance of penalties and the economical delivery of natural gas to MidAmerican Energy customers. The analyst is also responsible for computing and reconciling trading margin and accounting performance, advising on wholesale and bulk power contracts in electric trading, external reporting of wholesale energy transactions and providing financial and operational reports of gas and electric trading activities for internal use.

Responsibilities

Perform financial analysis and research for generation, gas trading, resource development, and finance/accounting business units. This includes analysis of fuel, energy and capacity supply and demand; analysis based on market value of energy and capacity, such as economic dispatch and energy and capacity costing models; determining the financial impact of proposed and current capacity and energy transactions and generation operations. Recommend strategic actions to be taken and coordinate expenses with joint owners. (30%)

Develop and oversee the accurate calculation and reporting of trading financial performance on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis; with forecasted year-end performance projected and reconciled weekly. (20%)

Provide regulatory reporting of capacity and energy positions and market values. This includes providing analysis work papers, responding to federal and state regulatory data requests, and testimony to regulatory entities. (10%)

Ensure timely and accurate verification and reporting of transaction activity and calculation of profit and loss for all optimization and hedging strategies. (10%)

Prepare and/or assist the business unit's employees in preparing annual budgets and financial plan forecasts. (5-10%)

Develop procedures and oversee the data reporting and billing from Regional Transmission Organization (RTO) markets. (5-10%)

Develop and review ad hoc reports and analyses for market assessment, gas supply and generation group. (5-10%)

Perform additional responsibilities as requested or assigned. (0-10%)

Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, engineering, business administration or a related field. (Typically six years of related, progressive work experience would be needed for candidates applying for this position who do not possess a bachelor's degree.)

Four years of related progressive work experience to include but not limited to energy trading or energy marketing.

Six to ten years of related progressive work experience to include but not limited to energy trading or energy marketing for the senior analyst role.

Skills to apply financial concepts and accounting principles to the analysis of financial reports and business opportunities.

Ability to direct and coordinate the development of complex financial and econometric models including those technically based.

Preferred knowledge of the trading industry related to trade types and settlements.

Strong software skills, particularly with spreadsheets and databases. Experience with industry models for energy and capacity costing preferred.

Analytical skills to recognize patterns in data, information or events and to draw logical conclusions and make recommendations for action.

Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently. Support the company's employee policies and procedures, including workplace safety rules.
