IFC's mining team (CEMMI) works with private sector mining companies and coordinates closely with the World Bank's policy team that works with governments on mining regulations, to facilitate the development of sustainable mining projects which provide critical minerals essential for the global economic development and just energy transition. CEMMI works with a wide range of investment products, from project finance and corporate loans on the debt side, to equity and quasi-equity in private or listed companies.

To support the growth of this business, IFC is looking to recruit an Investment Officer to:

(i) Provide the Senior Manager with analytical, strategy, communications, and operational support.

(ii) Provide analytical and operational support to the Metals & Mining team on project assessment, execution, and asset management.

(iii) contribute to CEMMI's priorities related to sector strategy and expertise, knowledge sharing, business development, and transaction execution. The selected candidate is expected to dedicate his/her time equally to these responsibilities.

The candidate should have relevant real-sector experience and a solid project and corporate finance background. The position will be based in Washington, D.C., and some travel will be required.

Roles & Responsibilities:

The role and responsibilities of the position will include but not be limited to:

• Providing strategic, operational, and analytical support to the Manager. Taking leadership on project corporate and department priorities, including Communications and strategy. For example, working and leading with Country, Strategy, Regional, and WB teams on joint products, communications, ESG, critical minerals leadership for external focus, cross-cutting work, etc.

• Coordinating and leading broader Infrastructure-related work. Preparing materials more generally. Responding to ad-hoc requests from Senior Management.

• Work with senior team members to identify, build, and maintain strong relationships with strategic mining clients, as well as banking and multilateral partners globally, and help develop a strong pipeline of high-quality investment opportunities.

• Work closely with other members of the IFC mining team, regional infrastructure teams, country managers, and officers to develop the mining pipeline, strengthen portfolio supervision, and explore mining-related infrastructure opportunities.

• Collaborate with regional teams in developing sector and/or regional strategies and support related policy advisory or "upstream" work.

• Review and analyze business opportunities and synthesize information into internal reports for decision-making purposes.

• Work with senior team members to help evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close new transactions, portfolio restructurings, capital increases, equity sales, etc., including developing financial models with investment analysts.

• Coordinate closely with social, environmental, and sustainable infrastructure advisory colleagues to add value to our clients' businesses, find pragmatic solutions to the specific sector challenges, and achieve sustainable development impact.

• Contribute to disseminating knowledge about mining within the broader infrastructure team via knowledge pieces, contribute to sector strategies, presentations, case studies, etc.

• Active participation in cross-functional project teams, mentoring and developing junior staff and analysts in the team.

Overall, the selected candidate is expected to share time and efforts equally across: (i) providing strategic, operational, and analytical support to the Senior Manager; and (ii) transaction support and processing; global knowledge for business and sector work; global client relationship management and business development.

Selection Criteria

• MBA or equivalent qualification.

• 5+ years of experience with a development finance institution (DFI), an international financial institution/commercial bank, a private equity firm, or a development organization with tasks related to financing infrastructure projects in emerging markets.

• Proven track record of successfully sourcing, structuring, closing investments, and asset management.

• Knowledge of the other infra core sectors (power, transportation, utilities) will be a plus; equity investment and project finance experience is essential.

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.

• Strong credit skills.

• Strong business development and client relationship skills, demonstrated by track record and ability to effectively focus on clients' needs.

• Willingness to travel.

• Financial skills: demonstrated ability to structure a variety of complex financial instruments (debt and equity) and financial modeling.

• Strong record of portfolio management of complex projects.

• Sound business judgment in identifying potential business partners.

• Ability to interact directly and independently with the management of potential clients, financial and technical partners as well as government officials.

• Strong inter-personal skills, ability to interact effectively with clients and colleagues from various cultural backgrounds.

• Proven ability to mentor junior investment staff such as investment analysts.

• Highly motivated, committed to highest ethical standards.
