What will be your role?
Title: (Senior) Investment Officer Financial Institutions
Based in: Mexico City (CDMX). The position involves some travelling (one week quarterly on average, mainly in Central America) to visit existing or prospective clients.
Reports to: Regional Head of Proparco for Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean
Job description summary:
The (Senior) Investment Officer Financial Institutions will have the following main responsibilities:
  • Business development and origination of transactions (mainly senior debt, but also junior debt and guarantees, and potentially equity) in the region (Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean) with financial institutions (banks, non banking financial institutions, leasing companies, credit cooperatives, microfinance...) with a focus on climate, SMEs, agriculture, gender and affordable housing.
  • Preliminary assessment of the transactions and processing of the first level of credit approval (clearance-in-principle committee).
  • Monitoring of the portfolio.
The region involves the following countries: Mexico, Guatemala, Belize, Honduras, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama, Cuba, Jamaica, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities:

Business development and origination

- Investigation and research for commercial prospection in the region
- Sector analysis in the countries covered (regulatory framework, financial system, key players...)
- Preparation and participation to business trips and conferences (Felaban, BID Annual Assembly...)
- Meeting with prospective clients
- Interactions with Head Office (FI LatAm dedicated team)
- Interactions with partners and peers (Development Finance Institutions and Multilateral Development Banks)
- Preparation of funding proposal to clients (indicative terms and conditions), in coordination with Head Office
- Drafting of project and product descriptions, and of various presentations

Assessment of the transactions and credit approval process

- Financial analysis: in-depth and extensive review of financial statements, projections and collaterals
- Analysis of market, legal, business, environmental and social information
- Know your customer and anti-money laundering checks
- Assessment of the risk profile of the transactions
- Drafting of the clearance-in-principle credit paper and participation to the committee
- Negotiation and drafting of the Letter of Interest (in coordination with Head Office)
- Potential support to subsequent Head Office credit approval process (due diligence)
- Potential support to execution process by Head Office (closing procedures and potentially participation to negotiations)

Monitoring of portfolio

- Maintenance of Proparco's client and operation database, inputting and report
- Following-up on clients in coordination with the Head Office FI team
- Production of the annual risk assessment report on existing clients and transactions


- Day-to-day management of a Junior Investment Officer (who reports to the Regional Head of Proparco)
- Contribution to new procedures, strategy and networking
- Preparation and participation to internal events (seminars)
- Support to the Regional Head of Proparco in any aspect of the job

Who are we looking for?
Skills required:
- Good relationship manager with strong commercial skills and ability to prospect and convert opportunities into transactions
- Ability to analyse the financial and operational performances of prospects with a strong sensibility for risks (an experience or knowledge of financial institutions credit analysis will be appreciated)
- Capacity to conduct a clear and comprehensive analysis of the financial institution sector in the relevant countries, as well as of the applicable regulatory and supervisory framework
- Excellent writing skills (for credit papers, letters of interest, risk assessment papers...)
- Capacity to work independently, to manage and train a junior, to multi-task and to handle communication across various levels
- Pro-active, logical reasoning, problem solving, analytical skills, disciplined and detail-orientated
- Interest for development challenges and sensitivity to environmental & social risks
- Willingness to travel (mainly in Central America, occasionally in LatAm, the U.S. or France) for prospection business trips or conferences (around one week quarterly)
- Willingness to be a member of a small team (7 people), and to work in coordination with Paris Head Office
Qualifications & experience:
- A relevant Master's degree in Finance, Accountancy, Economics, Business Management or CFA
- Experience of minimum 3 years in the banking / FI space in Mexico, Central America and/or LatAm
- Perfect understanding of financial institutions financials and financing strategies
- Transaction experience in debt within the financial institution space
- Proven fluency in Spanish and English (written and oral)
- Knowledge of French will be a strong advantage
- Prior international experience will be a plus
- Willingness to work in an international / French environment
