MSDC aims to support the Métis Settlements in Alberta by building strong mutually beneficial economic relationships, creating more opportunities for the settlements across the province.  MSDC is focused on economic reconciliation and equity for the Métis people of Alberta who reside on Métis settlements.  Covering 1.25M acres of land in northern Alberta, across eight settlements, with a total population of approximately 5,000 people, the Métis settlements are the only land-based Métis settlements in Canada.

MSDC is an impact investment management firm that will make strategic investments to build long term financial benefit for the Métis settlements as members of the Metis Settlements Limited Partnership using the principles outlined in our strategic plan.  We focus on building an investment portfolio that is diverse and builds on key principles for generational economic prosperity, social good and environmental stewardship. MSDC is focused on three pillars of investment – business and real estate acquisition and equity participation, major project participation and investment fund creation.  We are built on a foundation of Métis values, knowledge, and culture.

The Role

We are looking for a well-organized and analytical Chief Investment Officer (CIO) to manage our company's investment portfolios. The CIO will develop investment processes and procedures, complete fund transactions, and effectively maintain the investment portfolio. To excel in this position, you will possess a sound understanding of all investment policies and guidelines, demonstrate excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and maintain a strong professional work ethic.

You will be part of the executive team and integral to portfolio construction and investment process development. You will have strong investment knowledge and be able to manage the day-to-day investment accountabilities of MSDC.  MSDC is growing with a goal to build a portfolio of $100M of assets under management and manage a $100M Impact Investment Fund. 

Principal Accountabilities

  • Create effective and efficient investment processes.
  • Evaluate potential investment opportunities and make recommendations to maximize shareholder profits and investment returns and adhere to any previously chosen investment strategies.
  • Utilize risk management models, analyze budgetary limits, and predict investment required to meet certain goals and complete certain projects with as much accuracy as possible.
  • Write clear and well-informed investment recommendations based on thorough research and analysis.
  • Organize regular investment reports and reviews, including quantitative and qualitative portfolio studies.
  • Attend annual meetings, review quarterly financial statements, and remain up to date with any important valuation or policy changes.
  • Work with the fund investment committee to make recommendations for fund investments to the board.
  • Help manage and uphold client relationships.
  • Work with the entire leadership team to raise capital for the Metis Settlements Opportunities Fund.
  • Seek advice and services from third-party investment providers, evaluate and communicate with potential third-party providers to determine whether they will be a good fit for the organization.


  • Certification as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) or equivalent is preferred.
  • A degree in business, finance, or a relevant field from an accredited institution.
  • A minimum of 5-8 years related investment analysis or management experience.
  • Experience in raising capital.
  • Strategic thinker and proficient in decision-making.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and in a professional manner. Experience in an impact fund is preferred but not required.
