Commitments made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions require gigantic industrial investments as well as the development of many new technologies, all of which are crucially dependent on the availability of critical minerals. EV batteries are essentially made of lithium, nickel, cobalt, manganese and graphite. Electric vehicles need more copper than combustion engines, wind turbines are mainly built with steel and solar photovoltaic panels, made of aluminium. These minerals also need to be transformed in industrial process that have to be decarbonised.

SG's Mining Metals and Industries ("MMI") team is delivering tailor-made financing solutions to raise capital for large scale international investments along the value chain of minerals, from mining to their industrial transformation and more particularly in the decarbonisation and re-onshoring of industrial processes. SG has become a market leader in advising mining and industrial companies and projects, and more especially in industrial sectors, that are critical to the energy transition such as battery gigafactories and green metal production. This is a global activity with close to 50 front officers operating out of London, Paris, New York, Toronto, Sidney and Hong Kong. The team also holds client relationship management responsibilities in the sector and is also able to arrange and underwrite debt financing for its clients and their projects.
