The position within Citi's Institutional Credit Management's Underwriting team works closely with Global Spread Products' ABS and Residential mortgage business team in the underwriting, portfolio management and administration of a multi-billion-dollar warehousing loan portfolio secured by pools of consumer receivables, SME business loans or residential mortgages. The Underwriter is a strategic and experienced professional who closely follows latest trends in ABS and residential mortgage businesses and adapts them for application within own job and the business. Excellent communication skills required in order to negotiate internally, often at a senior level. Developed communication and diplomacy skills are required in order to guide, influence and convince others, in particular colleagues in other areas and occasional external customers. Accountable for significant direct business results or authoritative advice regarding credit and operations of the business. Necessitates a degree of responsibility over technical strategy. Responsible for handling staff management issues, including resource management and allocation of work within the team/project.

The Underwriter role is responsible for underwriting of securitized loans / warehouses in coordination with origination and deal closing teams.

  • Assist transactors and Underwriters in underwriting requests for credit extensions for new and existing clients, and in annual reviews with focus on more complex securitized loan portfolios.
  • Conduct and review due diligence and prepare or oversee the preparation of internal committee packages for approval, and follow through to obtain credit approvals from committee; If required, work with loan / bond sale team members for the sale or syndication of the loans to other lenders and / or Bond Investors and with Rating Agencies.
  • Create written and oral work products to test the financial feasibility and credit worthiness of securitized loans warehouses. Prepare and / or oversee monthly and/or quarterly reviews of existing borrowers in order to track compliance with various covenants or triggers as outlined in the Credit Agreement.
  • Demonstrate a solid understanding of Citibank products and services within Corporate Banking, Global Markets and the broader organization.
  • Be very familiar with Citibank credit policies and practices and regulatory policies, to assist unit in achieving compliance with the above and satisfactory ratings from internal and external auditors.
  • Provides training for less experienced credit officers and other credit center staff in technical credit analysis and loan closing roles. Provide backup to the team manager in workflow distribution and monitoring as needed.
  • Recommend changes to process to achieve greater efficiency.
  • Travel to markets throughout Asia to meet with internal and external clients, conduct due diligence on specific asset portfolios and participate in training opportunities.
  • Appropriately assess risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to Policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct and business practices, and escalating, managing and reporting control issues with transparency.
  • 10+ years of credit experience, of which minimum of 5 years in securitized loan underwriting or equivalent experience.
  • Individual must have excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Individual must work well under tight deadlines, manage priorities, and complete assigned tasks with minimal management follow up.
  • Candidate has quantitative skills with a high proficiency with Excel and other Microsoft based programs.
  • Excellent analytical and computer skills including the ability to quickly adopt new technology.
Additional non-core qualifications which will be considered are:
  • The individual should have a demonstrated track record and working knowledge of applying lending Underwriting Guidelines and preferably be familiar with the processes of Rating Agencies for securitized products.
  • The individual will have the tact and composure to be client focused while also managing internal and external relationships. A successful Underwriter will take ownership while maintaining attention to details and working independently.
  • This person will have the ability to read, comprehend, and summarize legal documents collected in the due diligence process or produced by bank's legal counsel.
  • Working knowledge of the nuances of loan transactions under market standard syndication loan format will be weighted in favor of the successful candidate.
  • Ability to travel (20% of time) on short notice necessary.
  • Bachelor's/University degree, Master's degree preferred.
