Our Venture Capital-as-a-Service (“VCaaS”) model is how we capitalize on these connections.

Band evolved from the corporate venture activities of Coril Holdings, an asset manager that principally owns and controls diversified operating businesses. Our team has accelerated growth and operating efficiency at Coril’s portfolio companies by leveraging venture capital as an external innovation best practice.

We are now offering our capabilities to third-party corporate partners looking to capture value in today’s rapidly shifting markets. Therefore, Band is seeking a Managing Partner to lead this new 3rd party asset management business. The successful candidate must have an existing track record of fund raising, responsible investing, and be fully committed to expanding Band’s corporate venture capabilities.

Position Profile & Responsibilities

The Managing Partner is responsible for growing the 3rd party venture capital management business. As this is a senior leadership position, the successful candidate is expected to be a proven builder that embodies our core values of courage, curiosity, and collaboration.

Principal activities include securing 3rd party investment mandates to build on our ~$40M AUM base and leading the development and execution of bespoke corporate venture portfolios. This role reports to the Founding Partner with additional responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Developing an institutional-grade corporate venture team & labour model enabling growth to $1B in AUM.
  • Supporting the Founding Partner in developing a repeatable fund raising & IR capability.
  • Working with our corporate investors’ management teams to develop bespoke venture strategies aligned to their innovation needs.
  • Identifying investment opportunities and presenting investment recommendations to internal and/or external investment committees.
  • Managing portfolio companies & fund investments to support our investee Founder team goals (including board positions, LPACs, and the like).
  • Managing corporate client relationships, including our Embed process and ongoing manager engagement to ensure strategic value is delivered through our venture activities.
  • Fostering deep relationships with founders, venture capitalists, and other key stakeholders in the investment community to build deal flow and market Band’s capabilities.
  • Acting as a thought leader in the venture capital industry by speaking at conferences and contributing to industry publications.
  • Contributing to overall strategic guidance and resource management for the firm.

Deliverables

The successful candidate will be expected to deliver on the following items within their first 12 months:

  • Deploy up to $7M into our PropTech and Industrial AI Enablement funds serving Triovest & Loram Maintenance of Way, respectively.
  • Secure a minimum of one 3rd party corporate venture mandate of at least $20M.

Job Requirements

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate most, if not all, of the following job requirements:

  • 10 years experience in venture capital and/or private equity with a track record of investment success.
  • Five to 10 years experience in entrepreneurship, corporate innovation, and/or business consulting.
  • A strong North American network of founders, corporate innovators, and other key stakeholders in the investment community.
  • Proven ability to build and lead a team.
  • Preference for CFA and/or MBA designations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.

Band is open to remote work but prefers its senior leaders to collaborate in person, therefore preference will be given to applicants based in or willing to relocate to Calgary, Alberta.
