Job Purpose :

The Global Tax Technical Research ("Tax Research") team focuses on Tax Research to support Tax Strategy, Development & Enhancement of Tax Services, Tax Risk Management, Market Presence, Client Facing Tax Support, leveraging tax expertise across BNY Mellon's Asset Servicing globally. The key component for this particular role is strong background in tax technical research to support tax service within Asset Servicing.

Role and Responsibilities :
  • This position will report to the Global Head of Tax Research Group (part of Tax Product) in BNY Mellon's Asset Servicing Digital business.
  • The candidate will take a lead role in tax research strategy and tax monitoring of all markets in the global custody network that supports our Asset Servicing Digital business.
  • The candidate will work closely with all tax experts in the organization, including Corporate Tax and our Tax Operations area.
  • Monitors and analyses tax laws, rates and compliance obligations as a result of global withholding tax, securities taxation or procedural change in markets (coverage of over 90+ investment markets).
  • Defines best practice delivery model and service policy.
  • Review and analysis of scope and nature tax services to ensure BNYM complies with relevant local tax requirements.
  • Informs BNY Mellon's operational delivery teams of any withholding tax changes and works with the business to implement processes arising from tax change. Coordination with Corporate Tax as and when appropriate.
  • Oversight of sub-custody tax services, SLDs and tax agreements with subs/tax authorities.
  • Ensure market change is communicated in a concise, factual manner both internally/externally.
  • Preparation of analysis to support discussions/meetings with tax authorities/governments as necessary to advocate workable solutions to tax relief models.
  • Respond to tax technical queries, supporting Tax Operations functions and clients, working with client relationship managers where necessary.
  • Research, preparation of analysis and communication of key regulatory initiatives impacting investment services.
  • Deliver ad hoc tax technical training/knowledge sharing internally and externally where necessary.
  • Close collaboration/communication with BNY Mellon's sub-custodian network and Global Network Management team.
  • Contribute and work with Tax Policy and any Tax Steering groups as and when required.
  • Participate in meetings with clients to review tax changes and where necessary work closely with the clients dedicated tax service provider/tax advisor.
  • Participate in relevant tax industry working groups meetings as necessary.
  • Extensive tax and regulatory experience (at least five years) in the Investment Services or Asset Management business, Professional Services Firms or Law Firm.
  • Possess a high-level understanding of the APAC and EMEA tax markets
  • Working knowledge of non-resident fund structures (such as, investment funds, tax transparent funds, sovereign and pension funds).
  • Custody Tax:
    • Withholding Tax practices on securities (domestic and foreign withholding taxes, tax treaties, financial transaction/securities taxation, taxation of investment funds).
    • European Court of Justice tax cases impacting securities
    • Capital Gains tax treatment of securities
  • Strong analytical skills and innovative thinking
  • First class presentation skills, both oral and written.
  • Proficiency in French language is desired
  • Ability to work and communicate with all levels of staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Proven ability to use electronic tax research engines.
  • Team player able to work across multiple lines of business

Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, tax degree, OR J.D., OR the equivalent combination of education and experience, is required.
  • 5-7 years of total work experience preferred.
  • Experience in tax analysis and advisory preferred.

BNY Mellon assesses market data to ensure a competitive compensation package for our employees. The base salary for this position is expected to be between $77,750 and $173,000 per year at the commencement of employment. However, base salary if hired will be determined on an individualized basis, including as to experience and market location, and is only part of the BNYM total compensation package, which, depending on the position, may also include commission earnings, discretionary bonuses, short and long-term incentive packages, and Company-sponsored benefit programs.
This position is at-will and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, change in geographic location, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
