Purpose

 

Reporting to the Senior Manager of Financial Planning & Analysis (Corporate Finance) (“FP&A”) the Manager, FP&A (Corporate Finance) (“Manager”) will manage a team of one (1) and support business unit leaders and Senior Management in strategic and tactical decision making by providing financial modelling support, pro-forma analyses, sensitivities and scenario analysis.  Hence this role is a high-impact and visible role that provides an exciting and unique opportunity to be part of the enterprise-wide information flow and participate in strategic corporate finance decisions.   

 

Some of the projects that the team works on includes but not limited to:

  • Managing the annual 5-to-10-year planning process (which ultimately culminates in an annual investor day);
  • Developing and maintaining the long-term corporate model;
  • Evaluating impact of (i) acquisition and divestiture opportunities, (ii) development of greenfield power projects; (iii) various financing structures; and (iv) other what-if sensitivity analysis; and
  • Analysis of capital allocation and other shareholder value creation initiatives.

 

The successful candidate will bring an investor’s mindset and is a self-starter, who is comfortable collaborating and working with cross-functional partners. Attributes for success in the role are: problem-solving, thinking outside the box, and coming up with creative solutions. The Manager will have an opportunity to manage complex work streams that involve multiple stakeholders, manage, and perform complex financial analysis, and build strong relationships across various teams.

 

The Manager is responsible for performing and managing processes within the team to:

  • Support the day-to-day maintenance, management, and development of the Algonquin’s consolidated financial models (short-and long-term) for decision making purposes.
  • Deliver value added analysis, including the development of scenario analysis to address requests from Senior Management.
  • Create insightful presentations to summarize analyses and facilitate decision-making for leadership.
  • Ensure the delivery of accurate and timely financial information to Senior Management, to support critical business decisions.
  • Develop high-impact frameworks, financial models, analyses, or metrics to improve decision-making.
  • Run effective meetings to drive outcomes (e.g., draft agendas, engage relevant partners, runs meetings and discussions).
  • Able to apply analysis/problems solved in one area of responsibility to other areas within their responsibility; proactively engages with those teams to share best practices and document processes.
     

Accountabilities

 

  • Support the Senior Manager in the development, management, day-to-day maintenance, and continuous improvement of Algonquin’s Long-Term Model (5-10-year financial projection plan for Algonquin and its business groups).
  • Actively participate in the current short-and long-term forecasting and planning process and provide recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Closely monitor financial performance and update the short and long-term models as needed.
  • Build and develop corporate financial models and analyses in order to provide accurate financial picture of the entity and provide valuation support as needed (ROIC, NPV, IRR, SOTP, DCF, etc.).
  • Work closely with Treasury, Tax, Accounting, business unit FP&A and Business Development teams to ensure planning assumptions are aligned with the key stakeholders, ensure collaboration and mutual accountability is in place.
  • Assist in the preparation presentations to the Board of Directors, Senior Management and various stakeholders as required.
  • Provide support and scenario analysis for CFO, Treasury, Investor Relations, Business Development, and various stakeholders as required.
  • Drive efficiencies in our processes through standardization and automation of dashboards, reports, & templates, as well as calendar alignment around key dates & deadlines.
  • Prepare financial analysis to support new investment, strategic or other business decisions.
  • Ensure all processes are well documented and appropriate controls are in place.

 

Other Responsibilities:

  • Coach and develop a team of one (1) Financial Analyst.
  • Develop strong understanding of the company’s structure and become proficient in various areas of business including but not limited to HLBV income, tax equity structure, project financing, utility, and renewable energy modeling.
  • Support the financial assumptions and projections in the Investor Day presentations.
  • Build a team culture of customer service excellence (for both internal and external customers of the FP&A team).
  • Understand how to extract relevant data from the planning system (SAC Analytical Cloud). Over time assist in the development of SAC reports and dashboards. 
     

Education and Experience

 

  • 6+ years progressive experience in a highly analytical environment with relevant experience in a corporate finance setting.
    • Candidates are expected to have a robust understanding of corporate finance and accounting concepts and principles that can be gained via a combination of education and work experience:
      • CPA/CFA/MBA or any other relevant financial designation;
      • Prior experience in analytical roles such as in corporate development, M&A, equity research, corporate finance, FP&A and transaction services. 
  • Experience managing complex initiatives in a matrixed corporate environment. 
  • Advanced financial modelling skills including developing driver based three-statement models, including FFO, debt and equity requirements, NPV and ROE//ROIC analysis.
  • Shares a passion for analytics and leveraging information systems to distill complexity into clear, actionable insights.  
  • Highly motivated to develop a direct team with a lens of succession planning to ensure optimal performance within the team on a long-term basis.
  • Preference for a candidate who also possesses experience in infrastructure-like sector(s) such as power generation, utilities, or energy industries, but not required for candidate who is intellectually curious and willing to learn (see below). 
  • High attention to detail and desire to learn.
  • Be comfortable with ambiguity and approach problems based on first principles. 
  • Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal skills.
