The Columbia Threadneedle Investments Intern Program is designed to provide students with first-hand investment management experience. The Quantitative Research Team at Columbia Threadneedle Investments is seeking a talented individual to join their team as a research intern. This position is an excellent opportunity to gain insight into the field of quantitative investing from an experienced team of investment professionals as well as exposure to all aspects of the investment process. In this role, you will contribute to research on stock selection signals, alpha models, and portfolio construction under the guidance of senior members of the team.

About the Columbia Threadneedle Internship Program:
Our 11-week summer intern program provides real-life experience in a collaborative and inclusive environment. As a Columbia Threadneedle intern, you will gain exposure to senior leaders, cultivate your business acumen, work on projects that directly impact the business, and network in a supportive, team-based atmosphere. In addition, you will have access to our Business Resource Networks, including the Black Employee Network, Young Professionals Network, PRIDE Network, and others.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-process large data sets for signal processing and model estimation, including validation, cleaning, normalization, dimension reduction and visualization
  • Evaluate innovative techniques for delineating noise from tradeable signals and constructing models from many diverse indicators
  • Assist senior researchers with the maintenance and enhancement of existing stock selection models
  • Assist portfolio managers at the Systematic Strategies team on projects related to portfolio construction
  • Present research findings and recommendations to the firm at the end of the internship

Past intern projects include:
  • Sentiment analysis using natural language processing (NLP) for alpha generation based on earnings call transcripts
  • Leveraging textual analysis to infer sentiment in company filings
  • Construct multifactor models using the eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) method
  • Adding a cyclical component to Energy and Materials models
  • Applying greedy algorithms to select signals


Required Qualifications

  • Current Junior at a 4-year university pursuing a bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Economics, Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or related field
  • Graduation date of December 2023 or May/June 2024
  • Enthusiastic self-starter who is motivated by achieving and exceeding goals
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment where you interact with a diverse set of analysts and portfolio managers across multiple asset classes
  • Flexible, creative, and detail oriented


Preferred Qualifications

  • Strong analytical ability and familiarity with statistical inference, machine learning, optimization theory, and some exposure to finance
  • Proficiency in scripting, preferably R and Python
  • Exposure to database management tools
  • Demonstrated ability to complete projects in a constrained period
  • Demonstrated interest in financial markets and systematic investing
  • High degree of self-motivation with strong integrity and ethics
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities
  • Excellent written, verbal, interpersonal, and presentation skills
  • Ability to work and communicate collaboratively with others
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite
