We are seeking an ESG Data Specialist to support William Blair Investment Management’s rapidly evolving ESG data needs. The successful candidate will serve as the firm’s primary expert on ESG data, leading data-focused projects and interfacing across various functions. The role is highly collaborative, working with our investment and technology teams to drive better investment decisions through the analysis and interpretation of ESG data. Specific responsibilities may include: 

  • Collaborate with the ESG Leadership Team and investment teams on all facets of ESG-related data integration to improve investment insights
  • Understand our evolving business needs and how our current data meets those needs; identify, evaluate and recommend complementary data sets
  • Enhance data integration in WBIM’s existing proprietary research platforms; contribute to the development of dashboards to improve investment process integration and research workflow
  • Analyze existing ESG data sources, methodologies, portfolio and investment universe coverage; understand and effectively communicate nuances of ESG data to different stakeholders in the firm including investment teams
  • Identify and address limitations of ESG data (e.g. missing data treatment, data quality criteria for inclusion)
  • Leverage structured and unstructured data, including subscribed and open-sourced data, to facilitate data-driven investment insights
  • Analyze and recommend potential AI-based tools to integrate unstructured data including industry publications, regulatory filings, news, social media, etc.
  • Recommend and support implementation of data solutions for evolving external reporting needs, including regulatory requirements (e.g. mandatory SFDR metrics); aggregate data as necessary for firm and investment strategy-level sustainability reporting
  • Work closely with Technology team on ESG data integration and visualization tools to support investment process workflow




  • 3-5 years data analyst experience with a strong interest in ESG/sustainable investing
  • Asset management industry experience preferred
  • Expertise in the nuances of specific ESG data sets including philosophical underpinnings, data structure and quality of ESG ratings, scores and other data sets from specialist providers
  • Track record working with databases, structured and unstructured data sets to produce ESG analysis or develop proprietary models
  • Hands-on programming experience with Python
  • Strong SQL skills as well as experience with big data and/or complex data sets
  • Experience utilizing business intelligence platforms and data visualization, such as Tableau or Power BI
