Manulife Investment Management Timberland & Agriculture, founded in 1985, is a registered investment adviser and wholly owned subsidiary of Manulife Financial Corporation. MIM TA is based in Boston, Massachusetts and is comprised of two core businesses; Manulife Timber Group which develops and manages timberland investments, and Manulife Agricultural Group which develops and manages farmland investments. MIM TA develops and manages diversified agricultural and timberland portfolios for a global client base. As of December 2020, assets under management totaled approximately $14 billion. These assets are located in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Chile, and Brazil.

 

MIM TA creates value through the sustainable management of natural resource investments. Through the five pillars of its Sustainability and Responsible Investing (SRI) platform, MIM TA integrates environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors throughout all aspects of its investment decision-making and property management. MIM TA impacts include managing 100% of its eligible timberland investments to third-party sustainability standards, planting over 46 million trees, sequestering over 2.1 million tons of CO2 from the atmosphere, and leading the effort to establish a third-party sustainability standard for agriculture.

 

Position Summary:

The Senior Portfolio Analyst will report to the Manager of Portfolio Analytics and will work closely with other team members across the Timberland Client Account Management/Portfolio Management team as well as other stakeholders throughout the organization. The Senior Portfolio Analyst will be responsible for supporting Portfolio Managers in the overall development and implementation of client timberland investment strategies and service of client accounts. This will include analysis (investment, operations, market, etc.) of existing and hypothetical client portfolios with key goals being optimization of portfolio performance, insurance that objectives and constraints in client investment management agreements are met, and drivers of past and future performance are understood and communicated effectively.

 

Key Responsibilities:

 

  • Point person (along with Portfolio Manager) for all client portfolio analytics 
  • Evaluate historical and projected portfolio performance
  • Evaluate acquisition and disposition opportunities
  • Work closely and communicate regularly with operations, research, resource planning accounting and other teams to gain understanding of investment performance drivers
  • Author management discussion and analysis to accompany financial reports for assigned portfolios
  • Prepare materials for client portfolio reviews, and participate, with Portfolio Managers, in the presentation of materials in client meetings
  • Respond to client questions and requests for analytics and data
  • Assist Portfolio Managers in the development and implementation of acquisition funding strategies, including: preparing investment offering materials and operating and financial model development
  • Monitor economics of global timberland markets
  • Improve analytical processes and reporting capabilities
  • Review and analyze property budgets and long-term management plans
  • Other ad hoq duties may be assigned as necessary to assist in the development and management of client portfolios as well as all aspects of the client relationship

 

Qualifications:

 

  • Understanding and appreciation of fiduciary responsibility
  • Commitment to SRI/ESG ethic
  • 2-4 years of related work experience. Additional experience is desirable
  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, finance, forestry, or agriculture
  • Graduate degree in business administration, economics, finance, forestry, or agriculture is desirable
  • Progress toward or plan to attain CFA or CAIA designation is expected
  • Familiarity with investment reporting and performance measurement is desirable.
  • Excellent analytical skills, and comfort performing analyses with various systems that house investment data. The ability to enhance and improve such systems is a plus
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills
  • Excellent presentation skills
  • Client service orientation. Prior experience working with clients in an advisory role will be an advantage
  • Ability to work at all levels in an organization, have excellent relationship building skills, and be a team player
  • Organizational skills and the ability to efficiently manage several diverse tasks at the same time to meet required deadlines
