The Role

Acorn Capital Advisers is seeking an Investment Director to expand their investment advisory activities, with a focus on strategic asset allocation; manager assessment and risk modelling. Additionally, incorporating ESG and impact into investment strategies is a key tenet of the approach.

There is a clear expectation that the candidate would become a partner in time. This role is ideal for someone with 8-10 years of investment experience gained at a wealth/asset manager or family office with an emphasis on strategic asset allocation and fund/manager selection.

Location: Chelsea office/home working with a preference for at least three days in the office and in accordance with any prevailing guidance

Position: Full-time; however a four-day week could be negotiable should a candidate have external academic or pro bono commitments.

The founding partners, Sally Tennant and Diane Seymour-Williams, each have over 35 years of experience with successful track records in the asset management, wealth and private banking sectors in the UK and internationally, including as CEOs and CIO of leading financial institutions. They hold Non-Executive Directorships and Chair positions at publicly quoted and private equity backed companies as well as with Charitable Foundations and with Family Business Enterprises. Amy Blackwell joined the partnership more recently and specialises in impact programs, philanthropy and advising on next generation issues.

Key Responsibilities

Working with the partners to assess clients' risk tolerance and appetite; to model strategic asset allocation and interpret risk outputs. To provide research, data analysis and content support to partners in the following areas:
  • Portfolio Oversight, Strategic Asset Allocation and Investment Risk
  • Modelling strategic asset allocation
  • Analysing risk
  • Collaborating with our third-party strategic asset allocation developer team
  • Financial Modelling
  • Employing analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Conducting sensitivity and scenarios-based analyses
  • Taking ownership of projects
  • Market Analysis and Manager Search
  • Working with our third-party specialist firm on manager searches
  • Researching non-mainstream asset classes
  • Working on specific projects, e.g. impact and ESG investing
  • Keeping current on key asset classes and global markets
  • Assessing managers' performance, style, etc
  • Client Service and Business Development
  • Interpretating clients' objectives and investment targets
  • Producing written and verbal presentations for clients, including analysing existing portfolios and proposed strategic asset allocations
  • Contributing to the growth of our business by attending pitches and developing a network of contacts
  • Writing thought pieces and participating in speaking engagements
  • Leading client relationships with empathy and commitment

Knowledge/Experience
  • At least 8-10 years of experience in investment/wealth management, family office or private banking with specific knowledge and experience in asset allocation, risk and portfolio modelling and manager/fund selection
  • Strong analytical skills; a good understanding of risk modelling techniques and sound business and investment acumen
  • Understanding of portfolio theory, global economics and financial markets and solid valuation expertise
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the particular ability to communicate complex ideas in a clear and simple manner
  • A client centric approach, well-organised, detail -oriented, ability to multi-task, work to tight deadlines and to build long-term trust
  • The gravitas to be an advocate for Acorn Capital Advisers, particularly with Family Offices and Trust companies
  • The highest standards of integrity and discretion, with strong compliance and governance principles
  • Sense of humour and 'can do' attitude
  • Degree level education required with CFA Level 3, Masters in Finance, MBA or equivalent preferred
