The Senior Research Analyst is responsible for performing due diligence, as well as, making recommendations for alternative investment offerings within Northwestern Mutual’ s $225 billion investment programs, which includes $55 billion in home office discretionary models. Research responsibilities will include product coverage within assigned asset classes and covering alternative investments, such as private equity, hedge funds, real estate, private debt, and interval funds. In this role, you will collaborate with our field and internal partners to provide perspective on assigned funds and communicate with advisors regarding various, and more complex funds structures, investment approaches, performance expectations and results, and how to position products within a portfolio.

Additional responsibilities:

  • Maintain a select list of approved funds available through 3rd party platforms which includes: adding and removing managers as funds close, new funds are added, funds change eligibility.

  • Write research reports for approved funds and ensuring appropriate due diligence is performed following NMWMC’s investment research process.

  • Assist in crafting educational content for advisors, which may include writing longer position papers on the use of alternative funds with clients and portfolio positioning

  • Manage relationships with outside managers and 3rd party platforms to include on-site visits and regular updates.

 

Bring your best! What the role needs:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in business, finance, economics or related equivalent combination of work experience.

  • 8 years plus meaningful work experience in the investment industry to include experience performing investment research and/or evaluating investments or investment products as part of a portfolio.

  • Background in manager research and recommending mutual funds, ETFs, SMAs, alternatives as part of a fully diversified portfolio.

  • Background researching and recommending private equity, hedge funds, real estate, or other alternative investments is also helpful but not required.

  • Broad knowledge of markets, investments, economics, accounting, and financial tools, such as Bloomberg, Morningstar Direct, Excel, etc.

  • Experience working with CAIS or iCapital is also beneficial.

  • Strong working knowledge of current trends within the investment industry.

  • The ability to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization, as well as with financial advisors. This includes writing reports, memos, communications, as well as giving presentations to audiences of varying sizes.

  • CFA and/or CAIA strongly preferred.
