Equity Research Analyst
We are looking to hire one or more analysts to join our team. We are a long-only asset manager based in Atlanta, Georgia, that invests in listed equity securities. We follow a value-investing framework, which focuses on finding compelling investment opportunities in reasonably-priced, high-quality companies. We are not relative return investors - all investments must meet or exceed an absolute return hurdle. Our portfolios strike a balance between concentrated and diversified - each position is impactful to the portfolio but we do not "swing for the fences" with any one name or theme. We believe this investing philosophy (value, quality, diversification) helps us minimize investing mistakes and avoid significant losses, improving our clients' odds of investment success.
Analysts at our firm will spend most of their time conducting bottom-up, fundamental research in order to understand businesses, industry dynamics and the accounting policies companies employ, with the ultimate goal of determining a reasonable and conservative estimate of a company's normalized earnings power. We are generalists by design and would expect our analysts to be generalists also.
While we don't require a formal background in investment research, we are looking for a candidate with three to eight years of experience in substantive, rigorous and analytical work. A typical candidate's background would be in finance or accounting, management consulting, corporate or investment banking, acquisition strategy or due diligence. We are also open to less conventional backgrounds such as those in law, engineering or investigative journalism. All candidates are required to have a formal business education, which can be in the form of a BS in finance or accounting, an MBA with relevant concentrations, passage or substantial progress in the CFA program, or some combination thereof. A strong working knowledge of accounting is essential.
As an independent boutique, our team is small and our organizational structure is flexible. Hiring and retaining high-caliber personnel is an essential component in the future success of our firm. As a result, our hiring process is unusually thorough, while our employee-retention rate is unusually high. Analysts must be self-starters, possessing a strong entrepreneurial mindset and an appetite for continued self-improvement. Analysts must also have a passion for investing and for performing in-depth research.
Besides a competitive compensation package, we offer a small-firm collegial environment with a relatively hands-off approach to day-to-day work. Our efforts are focused on learning, analyzing, debating and deciding within a team environment, with less time spent writing reports or preparing financial models. If you fit the above criteria and are passionate about investing, please send your (1) resume, (2) cover letter and (3) a one- or two-page write-up of a stock you like/dislike, or a valuable/painful lesson you have learned through your work to email@example.com.
