About this role
Business Overview
BlackRock's Risk & Quantitative Analysis (RQA) group provides independent oversight of BlackRock's fiduciary and enterprise risks. RQA Investment Risk's principal responsibility is to ensure that the risks in BlackRock's portfolios are fully understood by our portfolio managers and senior management and are consistent with clients' objectives. We also help build "state-of-the-practice" quantitative models and analytics that help inform risk taking and portfolio construction across the firm. RQA team members tackle real-world problems, using quantitative analysis and a multi-disciplinary skillset to provide tangible solutions in the investment management process.
Multi Asset and Solutions Risk Management
You will partner with BlackRock's Multi Asset Strategies & Solutions (MASS) to deliver independent risk oversight, risk advice, and provide quantitative analysis to assist with portfolio construction, performance measurement, product design and investor engagement. MASS provides investment strategies and solutions that employ sophisticated asset allocation, risk management, and extensive research to deliver specific outcomes tailored to client needs, delivered through a range of pooled vehicles, model portfolios, and customized mandates across a variety of asset classes.

Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will join RQA's Investment Risk Team in Asia Pacific and be responsible for the risk management of our Multi-Asset portfolio range in the region. Over the past several years, the MASS book has increased in both size and complexity, with a focus on customized solutions for large institutional clients.

The successful candidate will need to work both independently and with other members of the RQA MASS team to construct scalable risk analytics for the portfolios under their purview. They will need to see these analyses through from conception to implementation, and ultimately explain the interpretation to portfolio managers.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, taking a lead role in facilitating discussions with portfolio managers on all aspects of the portfolio construction process, working with portfolio managers to understand the exposures and risks taken, and providing the necessary risk oversight by ensuring that senior management is advised of risks:
  • Partnering with senior risk managers to help ensure that the risks are fully understood and are consistent with clients' objectives and risk constraints
  • Knowing the investment risks by thoroughly understanding all investments and trades
  • Regularly monitoring risks in the portfolios and presenting pertinent analyses on markets, portfolio risk and performance drivers to portfolio management teams
  • Assessing the consistency of risk taking and realized performance across model families and implementations.
  • Understanding how macroeconomic factors drive the investment decision-making process
  • Helping portfolio managers with portfolio construction and scenario analysis
  • Helping to define analytical and risk management's development needs for adequately monitoring risks
  • Partner with other groups within BlackRock (Portfolio Analytics Group, Financial Modeling Group, etc.) in developing new and improving existing analytics and quantitative models
Qualifications:
  • 5 to 10 years of demonstrated experience in risk management, research, or portfolio management
  • An advanced degree in mathematics, quantitative finance, computer science, economics, statistics, engineering or another quantitative field
  • Deep technical understanding of quantitative risk management and its application to investment portfolios
  • Excellent coding skills (e.g. Python, R) and ability to interact with databases (e.g. SQL)
  • Proven understanding of financial markets and portfolio construction techniques
  • An ability to explain complex ideas in simple but impactful terms in order to influence portfolio construction decisions
  • A passion for applying quantitative techniques to real-world problems including analyzing portfolio risk taking and understanding financial markets
  • Experience of Multi-Asset portfolios and risk management is a plus
  • Experience with scenario analysis, stress-testing, equity risk factor models, performance attribution, and other risk-related metrics and tools
  • CFA, GARP or PRMIA designation is a plus
