About this role

BlackRock's ETFs and Index Investments (EII) team manages more than $3.6 trillion in global passive equity assets across Global Developed Markets, Emerging Markets, Commodities and REITs. This includes BlackRock's iShares product line, the leading provider of ETFs in the world, with over $1.7 trillion in assets under management. With a global footprint, strong client orientation and an innovative product range, iShares was the industry's number one in flows in 2017 with $245 billion, a 19% organic asset growth and flow market share of 36%. Through the flagship U.S. and EMEA product lines, iShares operates over 800 ETFs, the broadest range of ETF investment options, offering exposure to virtually the entire investable universe, from the most essential to the deepest niche; and our funds are equally accessible to institutions, advisers and individuals. The Index and ETF Investments Business also oversees over $2 trillion in Index Equity funds (mutual funds, pooled funds, segregated mandates) and offers index equity investors the industry's broadest array of investment choices. The Index Equity Portfolio Management team has primary offices in San Francisco, London, Munich, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Our portfolio teams manage assets for institutional and individual investors alike. Accordingly, all of our clients benefit from our portfolio management expertise and risk management analytics. All of our portfolio managers leverage the expertise of other investment teams through the strength of a shared research, trading and risk management platform.

The BlackRock APAC Portfolio Analysis and Solutions (BPAS) team is part of BlackRock's global portfolio consulting proposition which partners with clients across geographies to help them achieve their portfolio outcomes using BlackRock active and indexed products (under the iShares brand).

Leveraging BlackRock's unique Aladdin® risk platform and the BlackRock Investment Institute's macro insights, the team help investors de-code the risks, factor exposures and specific features of existing portfolios and evolve them. Furthermore, the team helps clients design new investment propositions and solutions from distribution products to in-house investments, servicing all client segments from wealth management through to pension funds and insurers across the Asia Pacific region. This is achieved by addressing each of our clients' unique requirements working in close partnership with the BlackRock sales channels.

The portfolio strategist will work closely with the BlackRock APAC EII and Client Business teams, delivering portfolio solutions to clients, and contributing to the selling of BlackRock active and indexed products through a solution driven approach.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ability to understand and implement macroeconomic and asset-class themes within portfolio investing to drive investment into portfolio solutions for client segments across APAC.
  • Ability to conduct portfolio construction and implementation research.
  • Ability to work with the team and with sales teams to construct portfolios tailored to client requirements, which vary by country/region.
  • Ability to gather data and assimilate investment strategy and model portfolio solutions data within the context of working with clients to build investment portfolios.
  • Involvement in key research projects, leverage experience and expertise in portfolio construction to contribute to relevant research projects and participate in the creation of research publications where applicable.
  • Build relationships with other teams supporting the investment data and portfolio build and maintenance process. Closely partner with multiple teams across the organization in the execution of joint research work.
  • Partner with sales to drive flows into BlackRock products through portfolio analyses and solutions; serve as product/investment specialist for client discussions.
  • Maintain and continuously enhance a deep technical investment, product and competitive knowledge base.
  • Involvement in the development of the analytical platform used by the team in APAC, focused on scaling the delivery of quality and insightful analysis to clients.


Skills/Experience:
  • Experience in portfolio management or investment research area of a financial firm. Preferable: experience in an investment consulting firm.
  • Strong fiduciary and client focused mindset
  • Self driven and takes an entrepreneurial/commercial approach to client work
  • Excellent analytical skills, as evidenced by formal training in econometrics or statistics, and extensive experience in utilizing those skills in an applied research environment.
  • Undergraduate or higher degree in a quantitative/analytical, finance or economics discipline, CFA desirable.
  • Strong understanding of financial markets, including drivers of return, risk control and portfolio construction techniques.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal. The successful candidate must have the confidence and credibility to persuasively interact with colleagues, management, and clients.
  • Strong understanding of the use of analytical tools in financial and economic research.
  • Programming skills in VBA, SQL and/or Matlab desirable.
  • Strong understanding of data available in the investment management industry and experience in managing and accessing such data to support research efforts.
  • Ability to work efficiently and multi-task effectively in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment. This will include research project work solution generation and implementation.
  • Cantonese and/or Mandarin desirable
