Business Overview
BlackRock's Risk & Quantitative Analysis (RQA) group provides independent oversight of BlackRock's fiduciary and enterprise risks. RQA Investment Risk's principal responsibility is to ensure that the risks in BlackRock's portfolios are fully understood by our portfolio managers and senior management and are consistent with clients' objectives. We also help build "state-of-the-practice" quantitative models and analytics that help inform risk taking and portfolio construction across the firm. RQA team members tackle real-world problems, using quantitative analysis and a multi-disciplinary skillset to provide tangible solutions in the investment management process. The group helps investors / portfolio managers to assess transactions and apply proprietary techniques for portfolio construction. RQA works closely with investors / portfolio managers and business heads daily. The team also provides independent risk oversight for senior management of the firm and the board of directors.
Alternative Investments Risk Management
The BlackRock Alternatives investment team manages over $260 billion in client assets and commitments in portfolios spanning Private Equity, Real Estate, Infrastructure, Private Credit and Hedge Funds. You will be part of RQA Alternative Investments, with initial focus on Private Equity investments (Direct Investments in take-private, LBOs, Growth Equity and Venture Capital), Co-investments and Private Equity Fund of Funds and/or Infrastructure Equity and Debt investments, including Power & Energy Infrastructure, Renewable Power and Emerging Markets Infrastructure investments. The role is based in our New York office.

Key Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will be responsible for the risk management of investment portfolios and the development of state-of-the-art analytical tools. They will also have significant exposure to senior management across the organization. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Track financial markets and conduct financial, industry, market and economic research to assist in analyzing/assessing value and risk of proposed Private Equity (LBOs, Growth Equity and Venture Capital) and/or Infrastructure Equity and Debt investments and impact to current portfolios.
  • Perform an independent analysis of each transaction, summarize the investment proposals and suggest key business and risk issues to be discussed at investment committees.
  • Apply quantitative methods to validate and enhance investment underwriting assumptions and establish investment sensitivities and correlations to primary market and economic factors such as interest rates, FX, growth rates, inflation, etc.
  • Work with senior investment risk managers, investors and technology partners to ensure continued integration of ESG risks as a key consideration of investment decision making and ongoing portfolio management.
  • Analyze FX, IR, power hedging proposals, monitor exposures and assess hedge effectiveness
  • Perform financial statement analysis, corporate financial modeling and enterprise valuation reviews of proposed or existing assets and work with the deal teams to develop reasonable downside cases / sensitivity analysis on each proposed investment.
  • Create bottoms-up financial models to stress investments and forecast fund performance under different scenarios. Conduct benchmark and peer analysis on funds and portfolio companies, track financial performance and deviations from investment case / expectations.
  • Review, challenge and provide feedback on quarterly enterprise valuations of private companies.
  • Monitor performance of portfolio companies and assign risk/return ratings
  • Prepare portfolio risk reviews identifying material risks, presenting stress test results, setting action plans, proposing means to improve portfolio risk/return, and providing ad hoc analysis on portfolio construction.
  • Develop insightful analytics and proprietary techniques for risk, performance measurement and performance attribution for Private Assets. Collaborate with the investment and technology teams to implement enhancements.
  • Work alongside the Senior Investment Risk manager and deal teams throughout the origination and underwriting of new investments, providing independent perspectives on proposed investments and ensuring that the risks are fully identified and reflected in the investment assumptions / projections.
  • Liaise with legal, compliance and investment teams to perform reputational risk, sanctions and financial crimes review of proposed investments.
  • Assist in product development reviewing and providing feedback on the risk considerations of new funds / structures and separate management account mandates.
Qualifications:
  • 3 to 7 years of Banking or Asset Management experience (Equity/Credit Research Analyst / Associate, Corporate Credit, Project Finance, Private Equity, Infrastructure, Special Situations, Private Markets / Illiquid Investment Risk Management)
  • Investment Banking or Credit Analyst/Associate Training Program
  • Strong knowledge of markets, financial statements analysis, corporate finance modeling, portfolio construction and enterprise valuation techniques
  • Robust quantitative skills along with demonstrated analytical ability with experience manipulating and drawing conclusions on large sets of data.
  • Experience programming in Visual Basic, R, Python, or Matlab is a plus
  • Experience with Capital IQ, Factset, Bloomberg, Thompson Reuters, Preqin, Burgiss, eFront preferred
  • Undergraduate or Graduate degree in an analytical, financial and or technical major (e.g. economics, finance, mathematics, statistics, engineering, computer science, etc.)
  • GARP, PRMIA, CAIA, Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation is a plus
