The Role: Associate, U.S. Public Finance - Charters, Community Colleges, K12 Independent Schools
The Location: (flexible) Chicago, IL / Dallas, TX / Centennial, CO

The Team:
You will join a very collegial and professional team of analysts that are located, and that work on credits across the country. We are a national team looking for someone who can get up to speed quickly. The team is responsible for maintaining the ratings on a portfolio consisting of charter schools, community colleges, and K-12 Independent School credits. This includes meeting regulatory review requirements, engaging with market participants, providing industry thought leadership and maintaining superior customer service as a means of maintaining or improving our market leadership. A lot of the work is completed independently and at a fairly rapid pace, but every rating involves a team of analysts, so teamwork is very important. The group is highly collegial and we value our ability to work closely together as a team to get the job done.

The Impact:
This position is key to maintaining our market relevance and meeting our transaction requirements. As an Associate, you will analyze a portfolio of assigned entities as well as moderately complex situations, data, and information, assesses client's financial projections and resolves difficult deal-specific analytical situations. This position is responsible for meeting with issuers and investors on analytical matters, assisting in resolving client needs, contributing to media requirements in conjunction with senior members of the organization, and taking the lead at external meetings related to credits, as assigned by a more senior manager.

Responsibilities:
  • Act as the primary analyst for a complex entity or complicated transaction and be an active, vocal voting member of the committee who makes recommendations to the rating committee and prepares material for ratings publication.
  • Lead and mentor more junior analyst and provide analytic support to them.

  • Synthesize analysis into well-reasoned and well-supported rating recommendations that demonstrate a strong understanding of financial markets and business environment and the relationship to S&P products.
  • Write deal summaries and analytical reports, contribute to thought leadership pieces.
What We're Looking For:
Basic Qualifications:
  • MBA, MPA, MPP, JD, and/or CFA preferred
  • 2+ years of relevant experience in finance or the public sector
  • Accounting courses, with an understanding of GASB and FASB financial statement analysis and accounting concepts.
  • Ability to prepare financial forecasts based upon reasoned assumptions.
  • Proficiency with figures and the ability to maintain accuracy and be detail oriented while complying with deadlines.
  • Strong interpersonal and verbal and written communication skills in front of internal and external audiences, as well as the capacity to expand, learn, and make a contribution.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Working knowledge of charter school or university/college finance.
  • Strong understanding of financial markets and business environment including implications for S&P's analytical products and services.
  • A can-do attitude with excellent problem-solving, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to think critically; and the ability to mentor others.
  • Ability to work in a team environment, as well as independently
  • Modelling and R or Python programming language
