About the Team

The Global Public Market Strategies (GPMS) division is responsible for the internal management of equity, fixed income, and multi-asset strategies at SWIB.  It also includes the agency’s central trading desk and its Corporate Governance team.  GPMS manages approximately $50 billion in AUM which includes over 60 staff members spread across seven investment products, trading, operations, and corporate governance teams.  GPMS utilizes a mix of investment processes that seek to earn long-term excess returns by taking advantage of behavioral biases and/or fundamental insights that create mispriced securities relative to our assessment of their fair value. 

Position Overview

The GPMS Business Director directly partners with the Managing Director in helping oversee division operations and support the success of the investment teams.  A key focus of the Business Director will be on overseeing the operations team, improving the workflows of the division, and ensuring the quality of the infrastructure platforms our teams are using.   The Business Director will also be a primary interface for the division in collaborating with the Agency’s central services such as the IT team, Performance, Data Management, and Reporting teams. 

Essential activities:

  • Manage and support the GPMS operations team.
  • Serve as the interface between our investment teams and SWIB’s technology team and external technology providers to maximize and optimize the division’s use of systems, platforms, and data and applicable reporting from these systems and platforms.
  • Interface with Agency Business and the Project Management Office on cross-functional projects and initiatives that affect the division, including managing, reviewing, and prioritizing the business change list for the division with input from the Managing Director (MD).
  • Collaborate with the CFO and FP&A team on cost allocation and the development of the annual budget (planning and estimates).
  • Partner with the division’s MD to develop and present divisional planning and presentations, including the division’s business plan, investment committee reporting, Management Council quarterly updates, board reporting, and business continuity plan.  
  • Serve as the GPMS division’s primary interface with Performance to ensure accuracy and analytics.
  • Coordinate with Data Management and other shared service functions, as needed.
  • Coordinate with Legal on outstanding matters affecting the division.
  • Meet regularly with other investment divisions business directors to ensure collaboration across all SWIB’s investment functions.
  • To the extent not already mentioned, assist the MD and investment staff with non-investment functions, special projects, and analytic support.

The ideal candidate would have:

  • 10+ years of experience in investment operations with at least 7 years of direct experience in Pubic Market and Structured Products which includes equities, fixed income, derivatives, etc.
  • Advanced degree in finance, quantitative finance, or another related field.
  • Professional designation(s) such as CFA, CAIA, FRM, or CIPM.
  • Demonstrated leadership and management experience within an investment organization.
  • Substantial knowledge of the end-to-end operational lifecycle, including the processes, workflows, systems, and investment tools e.g., SimCorp, Charles River, Eagle PACE, MarkIt, eFront, FactSet, MSCI, and/or BlackRock Aladdin to support SWIB’s investment business.
  • Excellent analytical skills and the ability to think through problems, assess a variety of factors, and recommend solutions.
  • A track record of being a continuous learner who stays on top of new opportunities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with experience presenting at the executive level.
  • A proven ability to stay organized and focused despite the need to multi-task and advance several projects/initiatives simultaneously.
  • High levels of self-motivation and the ability to maintain flexibility and professionalism while under pressure.
