About the Alternative Credits Portfolio and Team

Alternative Credits is a relatively new and growing strategy within APG Asset Management that focuses on private debt strategies offering superior risk-adjusted returns that should compensate for the increased illiquidity and complexity. The majority of these strategies are managed by external investment managers which have been carefully selected and are monitored by the Alternative Credits team. Alternative Credits is an important part of the APG AM strategy that supports the ambition to be a long-term investor aiming at the highest 5-year (net) return given the selected risk profile and client targets. As such, the Alternative Credits strategy is expected to growth significantly in the coming years.

Position

Based in New York you will be part of the global Alternative Credits team (7 investment professionals) that currently manages ~EUR7bn of alternative credit/private debt strategies across different (external) investment mandates. The goal is to grow the size of the Alternative Credits portfolio and to provide our clients access to a well-diversified portfolio across the following sub strategy segments: 1) Specialty Finance, 2) Private Corporate Credit, 3) Private Structured Credit, 4) Direct Lending, 5) Non-performing loans, and 6) Distressed debt & Special situations. Alternative Credits is an integral part of the investment department Credits that manages approximately EUR69bn globally (43 investment professionals based in Amsterdam and New York) where a continuous dialogue takes place between portfolio managers (including Alternative Credits) to optimize investment decisions, portfolio construction, and relative value assessment. You will report to the Head of Alternative Credits.

As an Analyst in Alternative Credits, you will play an important role to achieve our ambitious growth and performance targets. Initially you will take the lead in the further development and maintenance of the internal portfolio monitoring, analytics, and reporting platform, which makes extensive use of portfolio data from our external managers. You may also be required to act as a liaison between the Alternative Credits team and external managers to fulfill the internal informational and reporting demands. Additionally, you will perform quantitative and qualitative analysis and help developing and maintaining tools to improve the performance measurement/attribution, risk management, portfolio analytics, and portfolio reporting of the Alternative Credits portfolio. Finally, you will support the senior portfolio managers in the analysis and execution of (external) investment mandates, which provides a steep learning path into external manager selection.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Acting as a liaison with our external managers and, as such, you have strong communication skills (written and verbal);
  • Assist senior portfolio manager in managing external manager relationships and data
  • Assist in the preparation of monthly reporting and portfolio analytics
  • Produce customized content for team, including ad-hoc portfolio analysis, research content, investment data requests and manager performance commentary
  • Coordinate and prepare materials for external manager meetings
  • Work with other departments including operational due diligence, middle and back office teams as part of investment process
  • Help monitor external manager data and prepare manager research reports
  • Maintain qualitative and quantitative databases


Personal Characteristics

  • You are data-driven and have experience in data management by incorporating external (portfolio) data into internal portfolio databases/systems, preferably programming experience;
  • You have strong analytical skills and you take self-initiative to continuously improve existing processes and tools;
  • You work in a structured and replicable manner and have a keen eye to simplify and automate manual processes;
  • You are a strong team player who interacts easily and constructively with colleagues in a global working environment
  • You have knowledge of fixed income markets and instruments and you are passionate about investing;


Academic and Professional Qualifications
  • You have 3-5 years relevant work experience, ideally from an investment bank analyst training program or in private/alternative investments external manager selection and analysis;
  • BA/BS;
  • You have acquired (or are working towards) your CFA charter or an equivalent degree;
  • Coursework in computer science and/or programming
