POSITION SUMMARY

Northern Trust Asset Management ("NTAM") seeks an experienced, entrepreneurial investment-management professional to lead product strategy for its Funds and Managed Accounts Group ("FMAG"). The investment management industry is in the midst of rapid, substantive change, affecting virtually every facet of product-based investment management businesses (e.g., product design, investment strategies, distribution methods, business practices and attendant business models). This leadership role will drive the collaborative process by which key constituents and stakeholders within NTAM will convert on significant growth opportunities and lay the foundation for the sustained growth of NTAM's ETF and mutual-fund businesses over the coming years. FMAG's Director of Product Strategy will report to the Head of FMAG, will be a member of FMAG's leadership team and will work directly with key members of NTAM's executive suite.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Leads cross-functional teams involving key members of investment management, investment research, product and sales/marketing professionals to articulate and align the organization on a focused product strategy supporting future growth of registered products (ETFs and MFs) managed by NTAM
  • In partnership with FMAG leadership, drives ETF and MF product innovation centered around client needs/preferences, while ensuring strong alignment with NTAM's strategic priorities and values
  • Leads FMAG's registered products' strategy, while helping increase clients' affinity towards related brands (FlexShares ETFs, Northern Funds MFs and NTAM at large)
  • Ensures close coordination with all business partners focusing on revenue growth and presence in intermediary and institutional channels
  • Focus of role is on execution of strategic direction of business function activities Carries out complex initiatives involving multiple disciplines and/or ambiguous issues
  • Displays a balanced, cross-functional perspective, liaising with the business to improve efficiency, effectiveness and productivity
  • Makes staffing decisions, manages expenses and salary review process for the division
  • Participates in developing division strategic plan and sets goals and priorities based on the direction set for the unit; follows through to ensure that objectives are met
  • Provides leadership and guidance to staff, fostering an environment that encourages employee participation, teamwork, and communication.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
  • Knowledge and strong understanding of '40 Act registered products, inclusive of ETF and MF landscape and market trends a must
  • Seasoned multi-disciplinary expert with extensive technical and / or business knowledge and functional expertise
  • Experience of working with Independent Trustees of '40 Act registered products is a plus
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills are required
  • In-depth Financial Services/ Industry Knowledge is required
  • Highly flexible and adaptable to change
  • Leadership and organizational skills are required to determine the Business Unit's goals, resources needed, and to assess and develop the skills of staff.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION
  • At least 15 years of investment strategy or strategy consulting leadership experience
  • A College or University degree and relevant Financial Services work experience is required.
  • Advanced degree and/or CFA designation a plus
