Job Summary

Reporting to the VP, Investment Operations, the AVP, Securities and Treasury Operations is responsible for providing leadership to the operations function across all asset classes (excluding Real Estate and Private Equities). The role will act as the knowledge expert on complex products and instruments and will provide leadership and collaboration with various divisions with the onboarding of new trading strategies. In addition to in-depth product knowledge the role will also have an understanding of all downstream processes such as valuations, risk, compliance, accounting and reporting. This is critical as operations impact all downstream processes.

The role requires considerable liaison with senior leaders across the Investment Division, IT, Legal, as well as other finance departments. Additionally, the role also requires considerable liaison with various industry participants such as HOOPP’s Custodian, Tri-party Custodians, external broker/dealers, vendors, HOOPP’s auditors, and industry associations.

As a key role in Finance leadership, the AVP is expected to help lead the organization through cross divisional initiatives. The AVP will champion change in workflow and technology while looking ahead to ensure scalability for future growth and complexity.

Given the rapidly changing regulatory and tax landscape this incumbent is required to participate in various industry working groups to champion and influence regulations in favor of buy-side institutions such as HOOPP. This is critical as regulation and tax impacts HOOPPs trading strategies and profitability.

Roles and Responsibilities

Provide guidance and oversight to the team in the identification and documentation of risks and controls, while ensuring the effectiveness of the design and successful implementation of controls.

Provide guidance and oversight to the operations functions to ensure that it adheres to HOOPPs trade execution policy, relevant internal policies and applicable laws and regulations.

Oversee the various operational functions to ensure compliance with market, regulatory and industry requirements. such as but not limited to;

Monitor trade matching statistics to ensure compliance with regulatory timelines

Monitor trade reporting to trade repositories done by HOOPP’s counterparties to ensure accuracy. Failure to do so can result in reputational and economic impacts to HOOPP.

Ensure trades are captured, confirmed, reported and settled on a timely basis to manage HOOPPs reputational and economic risk

Provide oversight with respect to corporate actions to ensure that HOOPP positions remain fully hedged.

Lead, coach and develop a diverse and strong team of 20-25 professionals to deliver operational excellence,

Lead change through effective communication and meaningful coaching. Consider the organization constraints in delivering change with respect to culture, people, technology and funding.

Lead or participate in Finance and HOOPP-wide projects and initiatives, as required, and provide expertise with respect to Investment Operations.

Help create an organizational culture that attracts and retains high quality staff, allows and encourages them to be highly productive and innovative, and provides opportunities for growth and development through continuous assessment, coaching, and mentoring team members

Monitor industry trends and standards for Investment Operations. Assess the impact on HOOPP and implement changes in processes, staffing and technology, to ensure HOOPP is in compliance with regulatory requirements and meeting industry best practices.

Act as a trusted advisor to Investment Management in assessing the operational impact and viability of new strategies.

Provide oversight and guidance to support HOOPP’s external, internal and ICFR audits. Given the nature and risk of Investment Operations, this area is the heavily impacted.

Represent HOOPP at various industry associations and working groups that respond to regulatory requests for comments on proposed policy.

Champion the evolution of workflow redesign, reengineering and automation to continuously improve efficiency and implement a framework of robust controls to reduce operational risk.

Cultivate strong relationships with leaders across the organization to break down silos and encourage cross divisional communication and partnerships.

Build and manage relationships with industry participants including but not limited to;

  • HOOPP’s fund custodian
  • Tri-party custodians
  • Broker/Dealers
  • Vendors
  • External Managers
  • Peer plans

Qualifications

Keep abreast of regulatory and tax landscape through participation in various industry associations and working groups

Keep abreast of industry tools that allows HOOPP to connect with the Broker/Dealer community in an automated fashion, and that allows quick implementation of regulatory changes

Knowledge of Simcorp Dimension, Business Intelligence tools such as QlikView and Tableau

University degree in Finance is required

CFA is required

Post-Graduate degree in Finance or CPA designation is an asset

Minimum of 15 years of experience in Investment Operations within the pension industry or financial service sector.

Minimum of 10 years managing staff, with proven ability to provide leadership and strategic direction.
