The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an exceptional colleague to join our Institutional Portfolio Management team. We are looking for a bright, self-motivated high-performer who is passionate about client service and investment management. The individual must be willing and able to strengthen our culture and help us continue to build Mawer into one of the best investment management firms in the world.

The Institutional Portfolio Manager (IPM) will be responsible for portfolio management, client servicing, and operating as an investment specialist (subject matter expert) able to clearly articulate Mawer’s investment philosophy, process, and details of each asset class strategy.  

This position reports to the Director of Institutional Client Management.

Primary Responsibilities

Portfolio Management 

  • Act as an investment professional who can stand in for the asset class managers (portfolio managers) with institutional clients, consultants, and institutional prospects
  • Work with asset class managers to fully understand portfolio management decisions and underlying investment thesis 
  • Manage a portfolio of approximately 40 institutional clients
  • Implement changes to the structure of the portfolios to ensure appropriate diversification, risk, return, etc. 
  • Work with clients to evaluate, analyze, draft, and implement investment policies consistent with the objectives and risk tolerance of the organization 
  • Meet with clients and prospects to explain the investment philosophy, process, and performance of specific investment strategies
  • Work closely with Mawer’s sales and marketing teams to effectively communicate product information
  • Full awareness of implications of current events to client portfolios 

Client Relationships

  • Responsible for all aspects of client relationship building, including client review meetings, investment commentary, investment policy compliance, and reporting
  • Work collaboratively with appropriate areas of the firm to coordinate all client requests
  • Highly competent communicator with ability to clearly articulate details of investment philosophy, process, and investment results 

Ad Hoc Responsibilities 

  • Promote the firm by enhancing its marketplace presence through attending industry functions such as open houses and seminars, and participate as a host, speaker, or presenter 
  • Develop new prospects and profitable business within the marketplace and current client base 
  • Actively participate in the firm’s thought leadership initiatives through written communications and other media  
  • Support a work environment that inspires innovation, creativity, collaboration, and diversity

Education, Skills, & Qualifications

  • University Degree 
  • CFA designation 
  • Advanced (10+ years) investment industry experience, preferably in an institutional client-facing role and successful business development track record 
  • Currently registered as an Advising Representative (Portfolio Manager) with the provincial securities commission where operating 
  • Willingness to travel frequently is a requirement of the role
