About this role

BlackRock Alternative Advisors (BAA), BlackRock's Hedge Fund Solutions business, manages over $24 billion in assets across absolute return and hybrid strategies for a broadly-diversified, global client base. BAA emphasizes a long-standing application of a consistent investment process and philosophy, across a 20+-year history. The BAA platform includes investment teams in Seattle, New York, London, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.

The BAA team is seeking a Risk Management professional in either New York or Seattle to perform analysis on the risk attributes of hedge fund investments and individual clients' customized hedge fund portfolios. This individual will focus on strategies spanning relative value, structured credit, and directional trading strategies, with an emphasis on utilizing quantitative techniques in assessing those investments. To meet this objective, the individual will work closely with teams and individuals responsible for manager research, risk management, operational due diligence, risk reporting, and portfolio management.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret risk factor exposures for underlying hedge funds and custom hedge fund solution portfolios, tailored to individual client objectives
  • Evaluate risk exposures and assess risk of loss for hedge fund investments and the corresponding impact at the aggregate portfolio level
  • Contrast portfolios and trading styles across multiple investments; identifying distinguishing characteristics that might lead to superior risk-adjusted performance
  • Participate in meetings with underlying hedge fund managers to evaluate their investment edge and risk management processes
  • Effectively communicate quantitative and qualitative analysis to risk management, portfolio management, and manager research personnel
  • Provide input on allocations for individual portfolios, working closely with the portfolio management team
  • Identify the need for, and develop enhancements of the risk management tool set; working with other teams within BlackRock to implement these enhancements
  • Communicate in written or verbal form, risk methodologies and practices to prospective and existing clients
  • Contribute to enhancing risk processes and guidelines

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in finance, mathematics, statistics, engineering, physics or other quantitative discipline; CFA preferred
  • Knowledge of financial instruments including commodity, fixed income, and equity derivatives
  • 2+ years investment industry experience; hedge fund experience (particularly knowledge of relative value strategies) preferred
  • Proficiency with excel
  • Programming experience, particularly knowledge of R and Python preferred
  • Ability to operate on tight deadlines and prioritize daily activities
  • Self-directed with "roll up the sleeves" approach, while functioning well as part of a larger team
  • Ability to build rapport and relationships within the firm, clients, and hedge funds
  • Outstanding analytical and organizational skills
  • Demonstrate effective verbal and written communication skills
