What is the opportunity?
For forward-thinking and results-focused leaders, this is an opportunity to join the Accounting Policy team of Canada's largest company, frequently ranked as one of the top companies to work for in Canada. RBC is internationally recognized for its commitment to innovation, diversity, customer satisfaction and corporate social responsibility. We care about each other, reaching our potential, making a difference to our communities, and achieving success that is mutual.
As part of the Chief Accountant's Group in our Toronto head office, you will be part of a collaborative team culture that strives to challenge ourselves to be our best, think progressively to keep growing, and work together to deliver collective results.
The Accounting Policy function serves a critical role by providing advice on complex accounting issues through a strategic lens. We are trusted business advisors who evaluate and advise on accounting impacts to RBC's businesses, drive change to operationalize accounting policies, structure transactions to optimize results and actively participate in industry advocacy on significant issues.
The Director, Accounting Policy will be a key leader in the team, collaborating with stakeholders across the enterprise on business critical initiatives including the project to support transitioning from LIBORbased rate to industry risk-free rates. This is an ideal position from which to develop an understanding of RBC's significant business issues, build technical and leadership skills and develop strong relationships across the Bank.

What will you do?
  • Lead more complex project work (e.g., transition from IBOR) to ensure the impact of new and amended accounting standards is (a) well understood by various areas of the bank including risk management, regulatory capital, taxation and the respective business units, (b) fully communicated to affected business units and senior finance executives and (c) well documented to support Accounting Policy Group's conclusion/position in line with SOX requirements.
  • Provide comments on new Discussion Papers or Exposure Drafts issued by accounting and regulatory bodies, advocate for the Bank's position through industry groups and evaluate possible impacts to RBC. Review complex transactions, such as the Bank's mergers and acquisitions, and help provide advisory services to key internal stakeholders such as Front Office, Tax, Legal, HR, Corporate Development as well as the external auditors and any third party advisors.
  • Develop and maintain RBC's corporate accounting policies in accordance with IFRS and U.S GAAP.
  • Liaise with RBC's external and internal auditors and other industry stakeholders on financial accounting and reporting policy issues, as needed.
  • Provide high quality review of various quarterly and annual management discussion and analysis and financial statement note disclosures.

What do you need to succeed?

Must Have
  • At least seven to ten years of post-Chartered Accounting qualification experience with three to five years working experience in an accounting policy or similar position.
  • In-depth knowledge of IFRS.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to communicate effectively to executives.
  • Curiosity and drive to learn new things and get things done, escalating and asking for support when appropriate.
  • Strong analytical, organizational and problem solving skills guided by a desire to "do the right thing" and act with integrity.
  • Proven ability to drive change and the willingness and judgment to evaluate when it is appropriate to challenge the status quo.
  • Strong interpersonal skills -- specifically, able to act as change agent, facilitator and collaborator.
  • A commitment to develop leaders at every level and elevate your team's performance.

Nice to have
  • Previous banking experience with specific exposure to Capital Markets, Hedging and Treasury is highly desirable.
  • Working knowledge of current U.S. GAAP is highly desirable.
  • Additional certifications or qualifications (MBA/ CFA/ Masters of Finance or Economics).
  • Experience with executive communications.
  • Solid understanding of financial institutions, including all facets of RBC's business and other activities.

What's in it for you?
  • Ability to make a difference and lasting impact.
  • Opportunities to do varied and intellectually challenging work.
  • A comprehensive Total Rewards Program including bonuses, flexible benefits and competitive compensation.
  • Leaders and mentors who support your development through coaching and managing opportunities.
  • Work in a dynamic, collaborative, progressive, and high-performing team.
  • Learning opportunities to help you sharpen your skills in addition to hands-on experience in the global, fast-changing business world.
  • Development of leadership and technical skills through leading-edge learning development solutions such as our RBC Leadership Development program, career milestone learning programs, and technical training.
