Job Description
Accountability Statement:

Reporting to the Senior Managing Director, Head of Investments, Hong Kong and Southeast Asia, General Account Investments, this role is a senior member of the Asia General Account Investment function, which is responsible for the management and oversight of total AUM of US$60 billion, covering a broad range of asset classes including global public and private debt, public and private equities, as well as other alternative investments.

The Managing Director, Asia Emerging Markets, General Account Investments, is responsible for the oversight and development of general account investments in Manulife's dynamic emerging markets including Vietnam, Malaysia, Cambodia, Myanmar, the Philippines and Indonesia. With a keen attention to fast evolving business needs and market dynamics, the incumbent drives new onshore investment opportunities and initiatives, implements offshore investment strategies, and provides stewardship for the on-balance sheet investments in those markets.

The successful incumbent is a strong collaborator who works seamlessly with business unit management, investment managers, ALM, Risk, and functional teams such as Tax, Capital and Legal at the local, regional and corporate levels. He/she leverages his/her superior investment and capital market experience, knowledge of life insurance operations, and strong communication and management skills to help drive the success of Manulife's emerging market businesses.

Responsibilities:
  • Serve Manulife's insurance operations in the Asia emerging markets in the capacity of an "outsourced CIO", overseeing a combined AUM of approximately US$5 billion
  • Develop and implement onshore investment strategies, opportunities and initiatives, working with the functional areas within the local markets, Manulife's global investment teams, ALM, investment operations, and other group functions
  • Lead a holistic effort in the implementation of offshore investments in Manulife Asia's emerging markets by leveraging Manulife's global capability, working with the local, regional and global business partners
  • Provide investment guidance and oversight on general account investments in those markets via active participation in investment committees and ALCO committees
  • Present investment performance reports, make investment recommendations, and otherwise answer to the investment committees, ALCOs, senior management, board of directors, and local regulators as required
  • Oversee the investment performance and the conduct of investment managers on behalf of the emerging market life insurance businesses

Knowledge/Skills/Competencies/Education:
  • Undergraduate degree in finance, business studies or actuarial science required; MBA, CFA designation preferred.
  • Minimum 15 years of progressive experience in institutional investment management and advisory
  • Strong analytical, communication and management skills
  • Demonstrated self-starter and team player
  • Exceptional capacity in dealing with ambiguity and uncertainty
  • Ability to work steadfastly, flexibly and efficiently in a fast-paced environment
