Risk Management Specialist – Legal & Compliance

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking an experienced Risk Management Specialist to help create, implement, and operate an Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) and internal controls framework. The risk management program will include the guiding policy, risk assessment tools, methodology for risk assessment, internal controls framework, and reporting processes. This role will be part of the Legal and Compliance team, which is responsible for identifying, managing, and advising the firm on regulatory, legal, corporate, and compliance risks. The team supports the General Counsel and the Chief Compliance Officer, who are responsible for the advice, oversight, and execution of core regulatory, compliance, and legal functions for the firm in Canada, the U.S., and Singapore. This position reports to the General Counsel.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Help develop an effective ERM program to identify, analyze, assess, mitigate, and monitor significant operational and other risks across the firm
  • Help to launch and operate the new risk management program
  • Develop and maintain an effective risk management process and its procedures to support business units in identifying, assessing, and managing risk
  • Maintain a risk register and risk assessment methodology
  • Promote a risk-aware culture through regular communications and training
  • Educate and advise business leaders on internal controls and best practices to manage risks
  • Recommend updates to policies and procedures and process changes
  • Participate in compliance, regulatory, and operational projects and procedure enhancements
  • Monitor industry trends and best practices and recommend ways to apply them at Mawer  

Education, Skills, & Qualification

  • University Degree in finance, accounting, economics, law, or another related field
  • CIA, CPA, CRMA, or other relevant certification, or equivalent risk management experience will be considered an asset
  • Five to eight years of experience assessing operational risks in a financial services or investment management industry
  • Experience with an internal controls framework and adapting industry risk assessment methodologies (e.g. COSO, NIST, ISO 31000) 
  • Ability to interpret new regulatory requirements, best practices, and implement changes to risk management processes
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Superior problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Ability to work independently, think critically, and make decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong organization and prioritization skills with exceptional attention to detail
