GENERAL PURPOSE OF THE JOB:

The Collateralized Loan Obligation (CLO) Portfolio Manager II oversees the investment and management of CLO holdings, including responsibility for the active trading of securities and risk management of the current portfolio while maximizing investment yield.

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Leads a diverse team of employees with responsibility for managing the employee life cycle and experience, including but not limited to, selection and retention of talent, continuous feedback and performance management, reward and recognition, corrective action and employee development.
  • Serves as primary analyst, portfolio manager and trader for CLOs. Manages broker/dealer sales, trading, research professionals and syndicate relationships.
  • Maintains continual knowledge of relative value and trends within the leveraged lending and CLO market place.
  • Monitors primary and secondary markets for purchase opportunities and market intelligence. Manages new issue deal flow, analyze each unique security, structure, collateral and issuer.
  • Performs detailed loan level analysis and cash flow projections in order to make security level recommendations.
  • Evaluates and executes purchases and sales of CLOs as appropriate for any of the American Equity companies in order to maximize investment yield and manage risk.
  • Manages portfolios within framework of investment policy and strategy for the company.
  • Retains familiarity of factors that could affect the CLO portfolio including, but not limited to changes to financial regulation, NRSRO/NAIC methodology and ratings, capital requirements, political and economic environment and any fundamental and technical changes to the CLO market.
  • Collaborates with the investment portfolio managers to determine investment needs and optimal asset allocation strategy.
  • Develops and strives to continually improve the CLO process and oversight of the portfolio and team.
  • Provides a quarterly analysis of portfolio activity and characteristics.
  • Meets internal customer information/reporting needs and assists the Accounting department with identifying and managing any CLO defined as other than temporarily impaired.
  • Performs other related work as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

Direct Reports: A small team of Securitized Analysts.

General Description of Indirect Reports (2 and 3-downs): None

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor’s degree (B.A.) or equivalent; plus four (4) years of progressively responsible related experience; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience.

Master of Business Administration (M.B.A) preferred.

 

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, PROFESSIONAL DESIGNATIONS:

Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation required.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

  • A deep and thorough understanding of the leveraged loan market, CLO portfolio management and specific details of structuring and securitization.
  • Strong customer service orientation.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Mathematical skills and strong attention to detail.
  • Proficient in the use of Intex, Bloomberg and other securitized software programs.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and successfully with employees, customers, and other outside third parties.
  • Strong organizational and planning skills.
  • Proficient in the use of MicroSoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals and technical/operational procedures.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to successfully handle pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Occasional overnight travel is necessary.
