NZ Super Fund - Analyst, Direct Investments

  • Join NZ Super Fund's global Direct Investments Team
  • Invest in unlisted projects and companies
  • Requires financial modelling and valuation experience

The NZ Superannuation Fund is New Zealand's sovereign wealth fund, established to partially pre-fund the future cost of New Zealand superannuation. The NZ Superannuation Fund has won global accolades for its financial performance, governance and transparency, as well being recognised as one of the most innovative sovereign wealth funds globally. The Fund is managed by a Crown Entity, the Guardians of New Zealand Superannuation (Guardians).

The opportunity
The Direct Investments team invests in unlisted projects and companies based on a top down overlay of macro themes and alignment with the Guardians’ sources of competitive advantages that include a long investment horizon, known liquidity profile and sovereign wealth fund status.

The team’s current portfolio includes investments in timber, infrastructure, healthcare, real estate, energy and technology. The Fund has holdings in several New Zealand businesses including Datacom, Kaingaroa Forest, Fidelity Life and Kiwibank, as well as offshore interests in innovative companies such as, LanzaTech, Rubicon Global and View dynamic glass.

The team is responsible for the origination of new transactions, managing and governing investments, including follow on funding rounds to support growth and exits via IPO or trade sale.

As an Analyst in the Direct Investments team you will contribute to the appraisal of prospective investment opportunities and support the management of the Guardians’ portfolio of existing direct investments.

Key responsibilities:

  • Assist with the management of the existing Direct Investments portfolio.
  • Assist in the origination, assessment and execution of new investment opportunities and initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with investment intermediaries, peers and co-investment partners.

Your background
You will bring approximately 2-4 years’ experience encompassing financial analysis, asset valuation, and financial modelling, preferably gained within corporate finance, investment banking, private equity, or corporate development. A deep interest in investment management is essential and it is anticipated that the ideal candidate will be appropriately qualified, with strong academic qualifications in economics, finance, law or related fields, or have commensurate experience.

In addition to strong analytical capability, this position requires critical thinking, intellectual curiosity, creative problem solving, and an abundance of drive and initiative. You will be comfortable operating in the detail whilst also able to apply a macro perspective to investment analysis.

This is a unique opportunity to build an ongoing value adding partnership with investees and gain exposure to significant private equity transactions. It is imperative that you enjoy developing external relationships, and interact credibly and comfortably with senior stakeholders whilst maintaining an ability to think critically.
