Investments & Treasury is responsible for the University’s investment program. The University’s endowments, at approximately $1.4 billion, are the fourth largest in Canada and provide approximately $48 million annually to support scholarships, research and salaries. The investment program is broadly diversified across asset classes and utilizes both public and private market strategies. Changing economic conditions require that investment policies and strategies be continuously evaluated to ensure that the long term value of the endowment funds are maintained after inflation and program spending in order to benefit future generations. Located in the heart of campus, Investments & Treasury is a dynamic team of nine (9) individuals working in a highly collaborative, innovative and professional environment. Under the direction of the Portfolio Manager, Public Markets & Reporting, the Investment Analyst is responsible for contributing to professional oversight, effective coordination and strategic management of the endowment assets.

 Summary of Key Duties and Responsibilities include:

Provides support for the implementation, management, and monitoring of both internally and externally managed public market investments for a variety of asset classes and strategies.

Identify, analyze, manage, and monitor a portfolio of investment managers and strategies utilizing quantitative, qualitative and interpersonal skills:

  • Assist with written recommendations for appointing and terminating investment managers, investment advisors, consultants and custodians
  • Review, complete and amend public market investment management agreements and other legal and regulatory documents
  • Analyze investment manager performance and prepare comprehensive analytics and reports for internal and external stakeholders
  • Provide global capital market insights and monitor developments using quantitative and qualitative approaches for internal analysis

Coordinates investment performance reporting and compliance monitoring.

Assist in the preparation of investment commentary, performance and risk measurement, statistical and financial reports for internal and external stakeholders; this function includes working closely with the University’s performance measurement service provider:

  • Assist with the verification of portfolio transactions and rebalancing; this includes monitoring liquidity, ensuring capital calls are met, security settlement and optimizing cash levels
  • Ensure that custodial banking, investment and financial systems provide accurate, timely and complete information
  • Ensure that systems used for portfolio tracking and market data are maintained and updated
  • Monitor compliance with investment policies, regulations, and best practices by investment managers
  • Complete various surveys and quarterly reports

Performs investment research, portfolio design, and risk management.

Conduct research to identify new investment strategies and opportunities:

  • Constructively challenge research initiatives and portfolio positioning. Review current academic research and capital market conditions; identify developing trends and prepare reports recommending strategies to enhance returns or safeguard the portfolio’s assets
  • Provide insight on risk management and its application at the asset class level, total fund level, and investment policy level
  • Analyze and report sources of risk in order to ensure risk-return objectives and risk exposures align with investment objectives

Actively participates in the development of all investment related policies.

Assist in the research and formulation of the University Funds Investment Policy, University Endowment Spending Policy, Board Investment Committee Terms of Reference, and Statement of Investment Principles and Beliefs.

 To be successful in this position, the candidate will have the following skills, abilities and qualifications:

  • Relevant undergraduate degree
  • Minimum of two (2) years of related experience preferred
  • Enrollment in or completion of graduate and/or professional certification (i.e. CFA, CAIA, FRM, PRM, MBA, or CPA)
  • Experience and familiarity with investment settlement procedures
  • Solid understanding of finance, capital markets, performance measurement, risk measurement and management, portfolio management, financial modeling, and sensitivity analysis
  • Proven understanding of economic and market trends, interest rates and currency markets
  • Knowledge of mathematical finance, statistics, fundamental micro and macro-economic concepts, and corporate financial analysis
  • Knowledge of economics, portfolio theory, and portfolio management
  • Proficiency with Bloomberg and/or other portfolio management tools
  • Understanding of financial markets and the ability to work within tight deadlines while maintaining a high degree of efficiency and accuracy
  • Strong written and oral presentation skills
  • Strong research and analytical skills
  • Attention to detail, organizational skills and the ability to make decisions under strict timelines
  • All Treasury positions require a Security Clearance Check
