Position Overview:

This position is based in the London office and is charged with leading the firm's retail/wholesale research practice, which focuses on asset management product development and distribution trends in the United Kingdom, continental Europe, and the Nordics, including:

  • Distribution strategies for retail asset management products sold through direct or advisor-driven channels
  • Strategies for retail product and sales teams, including asset managers' product portfolios, sales team structures, resource allocation, etc
  • Shifts in distribution channel market share and underlying causes
  • Needs, challenges, risks, and opportunities facing financial distributors and their advisor forces
  • In-depth competitive analysis of the largest distributors across European markets
  • Regulatory change and its impact across different jurisdictions.

Responsibilities and Duties:

  • Lead the firm's European retail-focused research initiatives; including direct ownership of annual research reports, contribution to periodical reports, and consulting projects
  • Build quantitative surveys and models using third-party and proprietary data, including survey design, data gathering, data modeling, and analysis, and exhibit creation
  • Conduct ongoing qualitative research related to report themes, which includes interviewing senior executives about emerging industry trends
  • Travel throughout the U.K., continental Europe, and the Nordics in support of research initiatives, client service and ad hoc items as necessary
  • Manage report projects and deadlines
  • Monitor and analyse current industry trends
  • Attend and present at various industry conferences in the U.K., continental Europe, and the Nordics
  • Build and manage partnerships with industry trade associations and publications
  • Manage a four-person team of research analysts

Qualifications:

  • 7 to 10 years of experience in financial services, preferably related to retail asset management product development, distribution, sales and product strategy, or market intelligence and research
  • Excellent knowledge of the fund industry and its main actors, especially retail asset management, products and investment strategies, and the major regulatory issues shaping the European asset management industry
  • Specific knowledge of the cross-border fund distribution industry, use of various fund domiciles, and the decision-making process that asset managers and distributors go through in relation to them
  • Exposure to product distributors (retail banks, private banks, family offices, fund supermarkets, robo-advisors, or other distribution platforms) and their investment decision-making process
  • Ability to cultivate a network of industry contacts for research purposes
  • Aptitude for synthesizing research, identifying trends, and providing commentary on relevant industry issues
  • Excellent organizational skills, strong attention to detail, proven project management experience and the ability and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Proficient in Excel; able to manipulate, and analyze sizeable amounts of data; experience with SPSS and knowledge or familiarity with Broadridge and Morningstar databases is a plus
  • Superior writing skills combined with strong communication skills
  • Strong team spirit and interpersonal skills
  • Fluency in English is a requirement, other European languages an advantage
  • Finance-related University degree; completion of, or progress toward, CFA® or IMC is a plus
