We are seeking an experienced Portfolio Manager with a focus on managing client relationships and generating referrals. The job offers a partnership track and opportunity to obtain equity in the business.

Burney Company is a fee-only Registered Investment Advisor founded in 1974 by retired Brigadier General Jack Burney and located in Reston, VA. The firm manages $1.7 billion, primarily for mass-affluent & high net worth individuals. We specialize in creating active, US equity portfolios for our clients using a structured, quantitative process. Burney Partners, the division for which this job posting applies, is the largest division within the Burney Company, serving approximately 1,100 clients that make up $1 billion of the overall AUM of the firm. Additionally, as another division within the Burney Company, Burney Wealth Management combines Burney Company’s investment expertise with comprehensive wealth management services.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Serve as the primary investment contact for many of our most important relationships
  • Work with the Investment Management team in the construction of portfolios
  • Prepare and conduct portfolio reviews
  • Communicate with clients quarterly via phone, email and in person
  • Develop relationships with clients to better understand their investment needs and changing life circumstances
  • Identify opportunities to refer clients who could benefit from additional wealth management services to our Wealth Management team
  • Identify opportunities to consolidate investments
  • Identify and pursue client referrals
  • Work collaboratively with our team to deliver a great client experience
  • Manage client pipeline and follow up in our CRM system (Salesforce)


  • Bachelor’s degree or higher
  • CFP and/or CFA designation
  • 10 years or more experience managing client portfolios and direct sales with investment clients
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience utilizing CRM systems and comfort with FinTech solutions
  • Candidates must have a clean compliance record
