POSITION

The global fixed income investment group at Wellington Management Company is comprised of over 150 investment professionals across 12 independent investment teams, six credit research teams and a quantitative research group in Boston, London and Hong Kong.  The team collectively manages approximately $484 billion in fixed income assets for over 650+ clients in 44 countries.  

The fixed income investment group's leadership team is responsible for ensuring Wellington has a world-class global investment platform with excellent investment results, capabilities, infrastructure, talent and products to meet the evolving needs of clients now and in the future.  We are seeking to add an Associate Director to join our leadership team to take responsibility for the fixed income investment platform in EMEA, working in close partnership with the other Associate Directors in Boston.  There are currently over 25 investment professionals in both London and Hong Kong that represent three investment and three research teams. 

The Associate Director will lead initiatives that will benefit the fixed income platform in these regions. He/she will act as a steward for those independent investment teams while also working as part of the leadership team to unify the platform, provide consistency to benefit the firm and broad "client," connect the dots across teams, take a long term strategic view and ensure the platform is flexible and adaptable to changing client needs and market conditions. This position is based in London.

Specific responsibilities will include, but not be limited, to the following:

Investment Capabilities & Talent.  Ensuring that we attract, retain and develop the investment talent necessary to meet our clients' investment objectives and ensure we are best positioned to anticipate evolving client and market trends:   
  • Identifying talent needs and gaps and providing ongoing assessment of investment skill/capabilities
  • Utilising a strong knowledge of the market and a broad network to help identify and attract the best talent to meet existing needs or the needs of the future
  • Playing a leading role in the continued globalisation of our investment platform and advocating for local talent where it is in the best interests of our clients
  • Providing ongoing guidance, coaching and feedback for both junior and experienced  investment professionals  (e.g. helping them have impact by focusing on money making ideas for clients; counseling team leaders on team dynamics; finding solutions to 'pain points'; enabling effective communication and the interface between investors locally, regionally and globally; utilizing firm resources, including Technology, Portfolio Coordination, and Trading;)  
  • Managing the mid and year-end performance and compensation review processes;


Strategic Planning .  Partnering with the investment teams, product management and relationship teams around the world to provide insight and direction to the team's book of business, and to ensure that we are managing strategies that meet the evolving needs of our clients in both the short and long term. 
  • Participating in new product development discussions globally and across functions
  • Advocating for changes in strategic direction with product management, GRG and the investment teams
  • Provide input into customized guidelines and fees 
  • Help manage investor time to achieve appropriate balance in focusing on generating investment returns


Regulatory Responsibilities. Acting as a supervisor for London based investors and ensuring the fixed income investors understand and adhere to their regulatory and fiduciary responsibilities
  • Partnering with legal and compliance to understand current regulation and its potential impact on the fixed income platform
  • Working with the key stakeholders to implement changes necessary to comply with current and pending regulatory requirements


Investment Performance, Integrity & Risk Promoting strong risk-adjusted investment performance and ensuring portfolios are taking risks consistent with client expectations and regulatory requirements.
  • Supporting investment team to develop well-articulated investment philosophy and process
  • Risk management, fiduciary and supervisory oversight, regulatory oversight
  • Establishing relevant policies and procedures for each investment team and FI more broadly, as relevant
  • Ensuring successful operational model for each investment process
  • Managing investment capacity for each team and strategy

               

Infrastructure & Support.  Ensuring that Fixed Income and each investment team have the necessary infrastructure and support to achieve its investment objectives and meet our fiduciary and regulatory responsibilities.
  • Ensuring necessary infrastructure and support is in place to meet our client objectives both now and in the future
  • Connecting and collaborating with key functional support areas (Trading, Product Management, Quant, Legal and Compliance, IT, GRG) and across regions to ensure effective end-to-end investment processes


Office Wide Responsibilities.  Playing a key role in guiding the direction of the EMEA businesses and representing the fixed income investment teams in discussions on the strategic direction of the local business
  • Contributing to discussions regarding the management of the local office 
  • Acting as a thought partner to other senior leaders in the local offices
  • Contributing to the attraction, engagement and development of talent within EMEA, outside of the Fixed Income business through informal mentoring, role modelling, coaching etc.


Qualifications       
The successful candidate will have a passion for fixed income investing, demonstrable problem-solving skills, a commercial outlook and the ability to thrive in highly collaborative team oriented environment.  He/she will be the utmost fiduciary and be laser focused on helping investment teams deliver excellent performance for our clients.  It is critical that the ideal candidate be an empathetic leader with the strongest ability to build trust based relationships with investors. He/she will also possess the following qualifications:   
  • 15+ years of relevant professional experience
  • Outstanding collaboration and leadership skills; able to work successfully with very experienced, passionate investors and with multiple functions across the firm
  • Proven experience of attracting, retaining, developing and motivating fixed income investment talent and fostering a diverse and inclusive team, oriented towards coaching and delivering feedback
  • Highly organized, able to manage, prioritize and complete multiple projects simultaneously; focused on results
  • Effective interpersonal and communication skills with ability to articulate and integrate numerous viewpoints and mobilize/influence across firm
  • Ability to navigate stressful situations with poise, focused on being a calming presence, active listener and pragmatic problem solver
  • First-hand investment experience, either as an Analyst or Portfolio Manager, would be advantageous
  • MBA and/or CFA (or equivalent) is ideal
