About the opportunity
 



The Financial Accounting Advisory Services (FAAS) team works with businesses and finance teams to address the risks of accounting, financial reporting and regulatory issues. FAAS teams serve as trusted advisors, both practical and innovative, to help our clients navigate through accounting and financial reporting challenges driven by the changing economic and regulatory environment.

 
Commodities Markets (CM) is a global specialization within FAAS, including the US (Houston as hub, and teams in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco) and Europe (London as hub, and specialists in Zurich, Geneva, Copenhagen, Munich, Paris). Singapore is start-up team and will function as Asia-Pacific hub, focused on clients active in trading energy, metals, agriculture, chemical and related products. Our clients include:


  • Global trading houses specializing in trading commodities


  • Trading divisions of large conglomerates, consumer goods and industrial companies buying and selling commodities


  • Financial trading and broking companies


  • Industry bodies and infrastructure providers in the sector


With a strong background and knowledge of commodity trading and related topics, you will be a founding member of the team in Singapore, leading a practice critical to EY's growth strategy, and an important global priority in EY's Vision 2020 investment plan.  You will have a unique opportunity to initiate and build a new business; engaging with clients, bringing them benefit from our insights, creativity and energy. General responsibilities include but are not limited to:
 
  • Lead and shape the vision and overall growth of FAAS Commodities Markets; providing guidance and direction regarding the practice to all stakeholders 

  • Continue to develop and manage the Asia Pacific team and ensure the regional practices are being properly directed

  • Bring future thinking on leading methodologies and business models to develop new and innovative capabilities and service offerings  

  • Market-facing involvement with key clients; participate in selling, closing and delivering client engagements

  • Have full understanding of the commercial aspect of running this business

    • Leverage business knowledge and articulate our strategy for new and existing service offerings across service lines within EY and externally in the marketplace. 

    • Tracking revenue, cost of investment in training/recruiting, competitive talent profiles

    • Oversight of quality and risk management

    • Sponsor recruiting of key individuals to grow the business

    • Provide oversight and direction for strategic acquisition
  • Interface with our marketing and communications teams regarding FAAS CM and our activities 

  • Identify and evaluate business and technology risks, and recommend internal controls which will assist with mitigating risks, and related opportunities for process and control improvement 


  • Travel to build relationships within the firm and within the market  


  • Responsible for directly operating the Asia Pacific practice including personal delivery targets
 


 


About you


 
We're looking for people with the following experience
  • Minimum 8-10 years of consulting and/or audit experience within a professional services environment

  • CFA, Energy Risk Professional (ERP), CIA, CPA or other relevant industry recognized certification

  • Demonstrated expertise in:

    • Commodity markets (energy, ags, metals) with a thorough appreciation of the economic and geopolitical forces that drive global and regional market dynamics;

    • Instruments, products, transactions, and commercial arrangements/structures in the commodity industry;

    • Risk management practices for various types of risks (market, credit, operational, compliance, etc.); and

    • Key commodity operating functions across the transaction lifecycle (front, middle, and back office).
  • A practical, pragmatic leadership style that can both shape the strategy and successfully navigate implementation through the political and regulatory complexities of a global firm

  • Demonstration of a substantial history working as a Consulting professional in the Commodities field with a strong track record and professional credibility in assisting clients drive business value, managing a diverse client/project portfolio. This will include experience in the commodities trading sector within an audit, consulting, technology, outsourcing function or industry roles in commodities trading sector 

  • Deep understanding of the current regulatory landscape impacting global commodity markets, e.g., G20 derivatives reform (Dodd-Frank, EMIR, etc.), MIFID, REMIT, and other regional and national initiatives

  • Strength of background and experience in assessing commodities transactions, new products & business initiatives, assessing compliance risk and providing compliance risk mitigation recommendations; working with and/or implementation of a Commodity Trading Risk Management application (e.g., OpenLink, Sungard, Triple Point, Allegro, etc.) 

  • Successfully managed and or played a key leadership role in building and developing a practice. This practice would have responsibility for strategic direction, planning and delivery of solutions 

  • Exceptional communication skills and ability to develop robust and enduring relationships with stakeholders; demonstrate perseverance and passion for growing the CM business while building highest-performing teams

  • Successfully worked in a highly matrixed organization that has kept pace with the growth and evolution of a similar practice, especially at consulting and/or specialty firms that have experienced significant growth in headcount (organic and via acquisitions) plus a variety of business models

  • Has developed and continually improved tools, methodologies, global delivery organizations, and other assets to drive innovation for clients with attractive return on investment metrics

  • Highly developed relationships with key finance organizations; collaborated, partnered and acted as a valued team member, both with internal and external stakeholders

  • Successfully developed and managed an organization that knows how to capture, evolve and build best practices for its services and packaged solutions  

  • Has delivered on results and driven strategies through partnering, leading, and collaborating with multiple teams/functions

  • Capable of harvesting EYs intellectual property (unique offerings and heritage) and vast industry knowledge into commercially viable product and service offerings; must bring a pragmatic approach to balancing all of EY's client-service interests while driving results to achieve desired FAAS growth objectives
