This position will report to our Senior Portfolio Strategist




The Portfolio Strategist will take a pro-active role in representing the Matthews Asia strategies, investment process, and investment views to existing and prospective clients globally.  The Portfolio Strategist will work closely with the investment team and be a principal interface between the investment team and the business development, client service, and marketing teams.


Core responsibilities include:

  • Supporting new product, client and marketing initiatives and existing client retention across the Matthews Asia investment strategies
  • Travel alongside business development and other client facing personnel acting as a representative of the investment team and strategy expert in non-portfolio management activities
  • Writing and/or editing thought leadership and market commentaries
  • Building and maintaining competitive analysis of Matthews' strategies against competitor funds and benchmarks
  • Keeping well-informed of market conditions, portfolio positioning and performance drivers
  • Supporting various forms of external communication, including conference calls, prospect meetings, portfolio reviews, webcasts and conference speaking
  • Providing input on the content of marketing materials including product fact sheets/presentations; requests for proposals (RFPs); competitor analysis; and other sales-support materials/guides
  • Ongoing education and support to the business development and client services team members regarding Asian capital market developments, investment processes, portfolios, and performance drivers
  • Substantial travel (approximately two weeks per month) domestically and internationally is expected



  • BA/BS, with graduate degree preferred
  • 10+ years of asset management experience, with portfolio management experience strongly preferred. Product Specialist experience or extensive client-facing experience is required
  • In-depth investment and capital markets knowledge, including specific knowledge of Asian and emerging capital markets - equity and fixed income - and Asia-focused investment products
  • Must be comfortable facing clients of all levels of sophistication including large institutions, RIAs, broker-dealers and retail channels
  • Strong public speaking, interpersonal and communications skills
  • Strong one-on-one and group presentation skills
  • Ability to articulate and represent investment team strategies confidently, credibly and persuasively - both verbally and in writing
  • High level of self-motivation, with strong integrity & ethics
  • Resourceful, proactive and able to prioritize and navigate in a fast-paced team-oriented environment
  • Should possess a strong analytical background and be a proficient developer/user of spreadsheets, Factset and/or Bloomberg
  • CFA preferred. FINRA series 7 and 63 securities licenses preferred
  • Must be a U.S citizen or authorized to work in the U.S on a permanent basis
  • Position is located in San Francisco
