Global Risk is a thriving and expert risk management function supporting HSBC globally with all aspects of risk management. The team actively manages a varied and dynamic range of risk types, including security, fraud, information security, contingency, geopolitical, operational, credit, pension, insurance, market and reputation risks. All parts of the Global Risk team use their skills, insight and integrity to handle established threats and those they see emerging, acting to protect and enable HSBC to deliver sustainable growth.

We are currently seeking a high calibre professional to join our team as a Senior Portfolio Risk Manager, WMR.

Principal Responsibilities

Wholesale Credit Risk Management (WCRM) is responsible for the measurement and management of risk and exposure in HSBC's larger and more complex customers and book products. The customer portfolio includes customers in all global businesses (particularly CMB, GBM and GPB), covering all product types, both on and off balance sheet. WCRM is engaged, inter-alia, in setting and managing wholesale credit strategy, policy, appetite, expectations and standards, interfacing with Regulators and other external bodies, etc.

This role seeks to support the strategies of the Global Businesses by setting and managing strategy, policy, risk appetite, expectations and standards for WCRM.

Key areas of responsibility include:
  • Support the strategies of the Global Businesses by setting and managing strategy, policy, risk appetite, expectations and standards for wholesale credit and market risk
  • Perform regular portfolio analyses to identify and manage emerging trends and risk themes across the region to minimize credit losses
  • Develop innovative solutions in portfolio monitoring and early risk identification
  • Provide qualitative input to WCRM stress testing activities and identify areas for ad-hoc stress testing as part of the portfolio management activities
  • Aid in the production, review and governance of IFRS9 impairment results across the region
  • Ensure that senior management are timely and adequately informed of credit quality and trends in the Wholesale banking and trading book across HBAP
  • Promote sound credit portfolio reporting and measurement methodology in HBAP
  • Ensuring WCRM is implementing and aligning to global strategy
  • Provide guidance, support and regional oversight of WCRM activities across all HBAP sites
  • Liaise with regulators and other external bodies regarding WCRM matters
  • Participate and contribute to Group-wide projects as Subject Matter Expert and through regional execution
  • Support the Team Lead to ensure that control activities within WCR are effectively discharged
  • Support the strategies of the Global Businesses by setting and managing strategy, policy, risk appetite, expectations and standards for wholesale credit and market risk
  • Perform regular portfolio analyses to identify and manage emerging trends and risk themes across the region to minimize credit losses
  • Develop innovative solutions in portfolio monitoring and early risk identification
  • Provide qualitative input to WCRM stress testing activities and identify areas for ad-hoc stress testing as part of the portfolio management activities
  • Aid in the production, review and governance of IFRS9 impairment results across the region
  • Prepare governance papers in relation to Portfolio Management for senior management consumption (e.g. RPOC)

Requirements

Background
  • University degree and/or post graduate qualification
  • Track record of extensive experience in corporate banking and/or wholesale credit risk
  • Previous exposure to large projects involving technical IT considerations is a plus

Technical skills
  • Excellent understanding of macroeconomic drivers and their impact on various sectors and geographies with an interest in how to interpret these drivers to actively influence the direction of the wholesale portfolio
  • Good understanding of financial products including credit facilities, trade finance, derivatives, macro-economics, econometrics and financial markets
  • Able to understand and consolidate diverse and complex business information, and identify risk issues
  • Strong knowledge of financial markets and business principles

Soft skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills to articulate complex issues in a simple, clear and succinct manner to facilitate decision making
  • Highly developed stakeholder management skills with an ability to navigate and often tactfully balance and influence opposing Business versus Risk views
  • Clarity of thought to facilitate quick decision making in matters across risk management, policy, governance, etc
  • Adaptability to a changing environment to manage work pressure, tight deadlines and competing priorities
  • Self-starter, with a proactive mind-set who is comfortable in a dynamic work environment
  • Ability to interact smoothly with senior management in Risk, Business and external parties (Regulators, Auditors, etc.)
