Help ensure a fair-trading environment for UK industry /

Bring your problem-solving, technical financial accounting, and business case writing skills to help us build a fair-trading environment for UK industry

Trade remedies help ensure international trade is both fair and competitive. Now that we are outside the EU, the UK has developed its own trade remedies regime to do this work. The Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) is an independent non-departmental public body that investigates complaints of unfair trade practices and assesses whether a new remedy may be needed. As part of our work, we need to carry out accurate, transparent financial reporting that reflects our important role. And this is where you would fit in.

We are recruiting for a new Financial Reporting and Planning Manager. You will need to be an experienced financial accountant as you will lead and manage the process of TRA laying its very first set of annual reports and accounts in Parliament in 2023 - a hugely significant milestone for us as an independent body. Alongside this work, you will have a vital impact in shaping the TRA's spending decisions by providing expert finance support to business cases with commercial considerations.

About Us

We're a small, friendly organisation tackling an intriguing area of international trade policy that hasn't been carried out in the UK for several decades. We are based in central Reading, close to the main train station, and are around 100-strong. We have our own analysts, legal specialists and corporate team (where you will sit) and we are all working together to support our team of investigators to deliver their important work for the UK.

About the role

You will be based within a small Finance team that provides financial reporting, planning and business support to teams across our organisation and works closely with counterparts at the Department of International Trade, our sponsoring department. You will be highly visible within the organisation, and will be involved in managing relationships with a variety of the TRA's stakeholders including our sponsor department, internal and external auditors and the Audit committee. In addition to carrying out your financial accounting responsibilities, you will also help shape the TRA's future spending plans by providing expert finance support to our business cases and undertaking financial modelling that is robust, accurate, demonstrates value for money and stands up to scrutiny by our expert Non-Executive Board.

About you

We are looking for someone with a strong background in financial accounting and experience of preparing a set of accounts from start to finish. You will also need to be CCAB fully-qualified.

You should be eager to develop new skills (for example, business case support, financial modelling and value for money analysis), well-organised, accurate and comfortable working with complex data. You'll also need a natural ability to communicate and influence, especially the ability to explain financial information clearly to non-specialist audiences. And, since our small Finance team supports a growing organisation, you will need to be both flexible and versatile - quick to adapt to variations in your work and environment and able to ensure your effectiveness isn't affected by change.

Development opportunities

The work you will do at the TRA will be as challenging and rewarding as it is far-reaching, so we've created a comprehensive development programme which includes both formal training and on-the-job learning to help you develop the skills you will need, as well as the opportunity to pursue a wide variety of development courses/learning opportunities.

All this is structured to give you the confidence to perform at your best and grow in your role as TRA's Financial Reporting and Planning Manager.

The role attracts a high annual leave allowance, flexible (hybrid) working options, season ticket loans and other benefits along with a generous public sector pension.

We enjoy our work and take pride in what we deliver. If this sounds like a place you can thrive and have real impact - apply for this role and we look forward to hearing from you!
