The role of the Research Analyst, ESG is to support the firm’s environmental, social, and governance (ESG) expertise and analysis within the Research process and further the firm’s expertise on ESG strategies. The Research Analyst, ESG will be considered an expert on ESG and will be utilized in this manner throughout the firm. They will be called upon to drive forward-thinking research at Marquette and serve as a resource for consultants. Duties include, but are not limited to, working with the lead asset class analyst to bring ESG strategies into client portfolios, serve as a resource for existing and prospective clients related to ESG, and manage the firm’s Sustainable Investing Group’s (SIG) meetings and agendas.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain list of sustainable strategies approved and/or in Research team’s pipeline
  • Coordinate general inquiries from consultants on approved/pipeline sustainable managers
  • Work with lead research analyst on new sustainable ideas; serve as a liaison between the general marketplace / consultant demand and the lead research analyst
  • Assist in screening for new ideas
  • Lead ESG education for the broader research team
  • Conduct due diligence on impact strategies in private equity and real assets
  • Pursue and maintain knowledge of passive sustainable strategies (managers, vehicles, and their approach)
  • Work with Research SIG Committee Chair on meeting with the “Head of Sustainability” at pertinent asset management firms
  • Assist with developing Marquette’s ESG integration evaluation scheme
  • Work with lead asset class analyst on ESG/sustainability research white papers
  • Develop expertise of racial equity/DEI incorporation in investment portfolios
  • Serve as liaison for MSCI ESG Reporting tool
  • Develop investment policy language to serve as baseline for various versions of sustainable investing (i.e., general ESG integration, MWBDE utilization, impact investing, etc.)
  • Execute quarterly newsletter around sustainable investing happenings and themes for consultant/client usage
  • Collaborate with Marketing team and consultants on presentation materials
  • Present at client meetings as needed
  • Organize quarterly broad SIG committee meetings
  • Work with steering committee to update marketing/expertise slides, particularly trends data
  • Attend ESG/sustainable conferences and industry webinars (MSCI, SASB, PRI, ICCR, SIF Foundation, etc.) and provide notes
Competencies for Success/Qualifications:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree with three to five (3-5) years of investment or sustainability-related experience
  • Passion for sustainable investing and corporate social responsibility
  • Strong analytical, quantitative, and critical thinking skills
  • Well-developed writing and speaking abilities
  • Self-starter with strong sense of urgency and accountability
  • Strong attention to detail and highly organized with ability to work independently to meet deadlines
  • Professional communication and interpersonal skills, ability to present information to consultants and clients effectively
  • Ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment and react positively to change
  • Knowledge of U.N. Sustainable Development Goals
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office, experience with MSCI ESG Research tool, Bloomberg, FactSet or eVestment a plus; ability to quickly learn new software applications
