The Role: Senior Director, Index Management

The Location: New York

The Team: The North America, LATAM and Global Benchmark Index Management Groups, part of the Global Index Management & Production Group ("IMPG").

The Impact: The Senior Director, Index Management, will lead a group of approximately thirty (30) analysts across several Index Management Teams whose core responsibilities include the launch, rebalancing and maintenance of a wide range of equity indices across global markets. This includes index families produced as part of strategic partnerships between S&P DJI and stock exchanges across the Americas and the iconic S&P 500, Dow Jones Industrial Average and S&P/TSX 60 indices. The group also maintains S&P DJI's Global Benchmark Indices, as well as the Global Factor and Thematic Index families, including the S&P Kensho suite.

The successful candidate will be expected to ensure the alignment of existing processes and adherence to global policies and practices across the group, seek out and drive improvements to those processes and practices and ensure full adoption of new tools and workflows.

The Senior Director, Index Management will demonstrate an exceptional understanding of equity markets, corporate events and their impact on our clients, and will leverage this to good effect as a subject matter expert for the Index Management function in Index Committees and working groups, particular where complex events and time pressure are key factors.

What's in it for you: As a senior leader within IMPG, you will regularly act as a key representative for the group for all internal stakeholders across the business with regards to operational matters and manage and participate in global forums and projects with varied topics and time frames and with high visibility across the organization.

You will also build and maintain key relationships with other groups within the department and across other departments, achieving results through influence and cross-functional collaboration with, amongst other groups, Index Governance, Product Management, Research & Design and Client Coverage.
You will work collaboratively with a wide range of indices, teams and functions across global markets and must be able to solve non-routine problems on an on-going basis, often working under pressure. You will set the priorities, goals and objectives for your group and ensure accountability for meeting them as part of the continued development of the direct reports you will manage and the analysts within your group.

Responsibilities:
  • Work with senior management to establish and execute on a global strategy to achieve Operational Excellence across the department. Cultivate and drive a culture of continuous improvement, disciplined execution, collaboration, innovation, and integrity. (20% of time)
  • Talent Management for Index Management employees with responsibility for staff performance, development and recruitment. Coaching and development for Group Managers and future leaders within IMPG. (15% of time)
  • Ensure high standards of quality are met and maintained across teams in different locations. Lead the Index Management QA process to ensure any errors are properly reviewed and processes enhanced accordingly. Participate in the global QC process. (10% of time)
  • Act as a senior point of escalation for analysts and team leads in dealing with all manner of high profile and complex issues arising from index production and maintenance, demonstrating calmness under pressure and sound judgement. (5% of time)
  • Represent the Index Management function at meetings with senior management, external clients and auditors (both internal and external). Provide updates on Index Management initiatives, explanations of processes and methodologies and remediation plans as part of the QA process, as appropriate. (10% if time)
  • Review and analyze equity index methodologies, ensuring new concepts are properly vetted and existing indices continue to perform as intended through changing market conditions, all the while demonstrating a deep knowledge of the investment process, portfolio theory and financial markets more broadly. (15% of the time)
  • Take a lead role in index committees, including joint committees as part of exchange relationships. Lead methodology reviews to ensure indices are calculated in accordance with SPDJI standards and continue to meet their stated objectives, commissioning and performing analysis to support the process. (15% of time)
  • Work closely with S&P Dow Jones Indices technology group to further enhance our system capabilities by identifying (and by working as part of a team to correct) deficiencies in our workflow and quality control processes. Lead User Acceptance Testing (UAT) as required. (10% of time)
  • Ensure client needs are met at all stages of the index management process (development of new indices and ongoing maintenance). Work closely with Product Management and Client Coverage teams to understand and respond to client needs. (ongoing)
Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 10 years' professional experience. At least 7 years' experience working with financial indices to demonstrate necessary knowledge and experience
  • Minimum of 5 years' management experience required. Experience of developing staff members and building teams and structures to meet business needs is strongly preferred
  • Bachelor's Degree. Advanced degree in business, math, economics, or finance strongly preferred
  • Excellent analytical capabilities and experience working with large financial data sets, knowledge of programming languages, VBA, SQL or Python would be an advantage
  • First class understanding of how indices are used, the impact of different methodologies, equity fundamental and corporate event events on financial portfolios
  • Ability to learn S&P's proprietary index calculation engines and rebalance and index maintenance procedures quickly
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to coordinate work done by multiple people and / or groups
  • Ability to take a leading and subject matter expert role in coordination with the technology group and production support group to further enhance our system capabilities by identifying (and by working as part of a team to correct) deficiencies in our workflows and quality control processes
Compensation/Benefits Information: S&P Global states that the anticipated base salary range for this position is $200k to $236 k. Base salary ranges may vary by geographic location.
