The Role :

Reporting to the Head of Investment Management (IM) Data Solutions, the Data Engineer will lead, design and architect solutions to complex data integration, process re-engineering, automation, and data science problems. This will require the Data Engineer to work with internal clients to gain a detailed understanding of their needs, and to assess new and exciting technologies to identify the most appropriate solution. The team helps our internal clients through the full life cycle of their projects, from design through to implementation. The position also focuses on managing aspects of a collaborative data platform that is being adopted by teams across IM for a variety of use cases.

This is a unique opportunity to join the IM Data Solutions team, a small, multi-disciplinary team that is transforming the way information is created, used, and communicated within BNY Mellon IM. The group works directly with BNY Mellon's Investment Management companies on strategic projects, creating valuable tools and insights for decision makers across portfolio management, research, sales, marketing, and other key areas of the business. The Data Solutions team capitalizes on opportunities across business lines using the best tools and practices, like machine learning, econometrics, agile development, and modern data platforms and technology.

Responsibilities :
  • Contribute to data engineering and/or data science projects to support groups across IM
  • Build data pipelines, visualizations, and other tools to enable data-driven decisions
  • Assist team by staying abreast of the latest technology developments, both internal and external
  • Work closely with other Data Engineers and Data Scientists to improve processes and enable faster insight-generation from complex datasets
  • Proactively and continuously improve current processes and documentation
  • Support the management of a collaborative data science and data engineering platform
  • Build and maintain relationships with key stakeholders across IM and the enterprise
  • Onboard new users to the data platform and provide continuing education through demos, documentation, and office hours

Preferred Qualifications :
  • BA/BS Degree (advanced degrees and/or CFAs are great too)
  • At least 2-3 years of general business experience, especially in financial services, asset management, management consulting, or similar environments (more experience is fine too, e.g. career switchers)
  • At least 2-3 years of hands-on data/coding experience
  • Strong generalist able to add value in a variety of ways
  • Strong interpersonal and client-facing skills
  • Excellent writing and documentation skills, to communicate effectively in a hybrid work environment
  • Ability to summarize technical information in a clear way
  • Proficiency in SQL and Python
  • Experience with modern data pipelines and/or data operating platforms (e.g. Dataiku, Alteryx, Spark) is a plus
  • Familiarity with basic machine learning algorithms and techniques and/or experience building simple prototype webapps for data visualization and interaction is a plus
