The work of BlackRock's BIS team is an investment function. The team operates in six offices across three regions - the Americas (New York and San Francisco); Europe, Middle East and Africa (London); and Asia-Pacific (Tokyo, Hong Kong, Singapore and Sydney) - and undertakes engagement with and proxy voting at portfolio companies on behalf of clients globally.

BlackRock strives to take a common view in-house regarding our engagement and voting policies and uses the BIS group to coordinate, communicate and carry out these policies across the 95 markets and approximately 15,000 shareholder meetings at which the firm votes each year.

Role description:

The Analyst / Associate will support Voting Operations and Analytics for BIS. S/he will be responsible for supporting and enhancing the technical tools and applications used by the BIS team as well as our growing data infrastructure function. In this role, the Analyst / Associate will change a wide range of key functions ranging from client reporting, corporate communications and voting workflows through the creation, management and usage of various tools and processes. Over time, the Analyst / Associate will support new quantitative research using large data sets - to link our sustainability-related investment convictions to our KPIs and to demonstrate the impact of our engagement and voting on long term value creation by portfolio companies

The successful candidate possesses a strong attention to detail, a passion for creative problem solving, engineering skills / data infrastructure knowledge as well as a desire to learn about ESG data and financial research.

The role reports to the lead data scientist of the Research function and is based in New York.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Support voting operations and client reporting
  • Develop expertise in third party vendor platforms and how they work with Aladdin and other external parties
  • Work closely with other analytical functions across BlackRock Solutions, the Aladdin Product Group and Risk and Quantitative Analysis to spec, maintain and build solutions
  • Support the next generation of client reporting by automating manual processes and delivering value to clients by connecting our stewardship activity to third party data
  • Use expertise in automation to enhance voting controls and improve analyst efficiency
  • Support ad-hoc requests as needed for clients, voting analysts and corporate communications
  • Ensure integrity of the BIS data environment
  • Oversight and quality control of proprietary data sets
  • Build tooling to enable self service capabilities
  • Build systematic alerts to ensure integrity of BIS processes


The person in this role will have:
  • 3+ years' experience in data engineering or quantitative research
  • Undergraduate degree is required, and an advanced degree (Masters) is a plus within a technical field (computer science, statistics)
  • Working knowledge and experience with relational databases and Sybase SQL or other scripting and programming languages eg. R, Python, or C#
  • Experience with ESG data, corporate reference data, proxy voting or corporate governance topics a plus
