About the Research Associate Role

Sands Capital is seeking two motivated Research Associates (RA) to join our Research Team (Life Sciences Sector). These individuals will support and assist our experienced team of Research Analysts to help monitor existing investments and conduct research on new investment ideas within the global Life Sciences/Healthcare sector for our US, Global, and Emerging Market growth portfolios. The primary areas of research include innovative companies, both public and private, in the healthcare and life sciences sector.

An RA is typically expected to work for 2-4 years before either leaving for external opportunities or being considered for internal promotion based on performance and firm needs.

Position Responsibilities

General RA responsibilities:
  • Supporting the investment research process by:
    • Creating and maintaining financial models that support the investment decision process
    • Sourcing, analyzing and sharing relevant market data;
    • Crafting well-informed and succinct written notes (e.g., investment cases and earnings notes);
    • Preparing questions for meetings with company management teams and industry experts;
    • Preparing presentations to support communication with various Portfolio Management teams;
  • Executing on functional tasks by:
    • Accurately updating company / industry data;
    • Synthesizing data into reports/charts that clearly convey key insights;
    • Updating and maintaining key Investment Team and sector-specific documents and tools to include company models, sector screens and data tracking;
    • Content creation for client and prospect materials;
  • Developing a strong team dynamic by:
    • Building and sustaining effective and supportive working relationships within and between sector teams;
    • Proactively communicating priorities, projects, and other status updates to the sector team;
  • Other administrative or professional responsibilities, as needed; and
  • Exhibiting behaviors consistent with Sands Capital's mission, values, and culture.

Sr. RA responsibilities (inclusive of General RA responsibilities):

Sr. RAs take on more ownership and independence in our investment process by:
  • Devising thoughtful research questions through the lens of Sands Capital's six criteria and our long-term holding period;
  • Originating and occasionally leading research projects (with oversight from analyst manager) to answer key research questions and support our efforts to "stay ahead of change" on new and existing investment opportunities;
  • Screening, sourcing and suggesting new investment ideas;
  • Co-leading meetings with management teams and industry experts; and
  • Mentoring junior teammates.

Skills and Qualifications
  • B.S. or B.A. degree in Business, Finance, Economics, Accounting, Engineering, or other relevant major. Some financial analysis coursework preferred. Strong academic performance.
  • MBA degrees considered for Sr. RA role
  • A genuine and demonstrable passion for investment research and quantitative analysis
  • 0-5 years of experience analyzing companies and industries, including investment banking, sell-side research, management consulting, and/or business development at a healthcare or life sciences company (4-5 years of experience considered for Sr. RA role)
  • Self-motivated with an analytical approach, strategic aptitude, and a growth mindset open to mentoring
  • Work collaboratively and effectively as part of a team, while also being able to work independently with a high degree of efficiency and accuracy
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills
  • Interest in pursuing CFA credential / CFA candidates preferred
