Associate Research Analyst – Private Markets

We are currently looking to hire a Research Analyst, Associate to join our Franklin Global Real Assets Team (FGRAF) team in Calgary.

What are the ongoing responsibilities of a Research Analyst – Private Markets?

Manager Research and due diligence

  • Executes due diligence process to maintain coverage of existing strategies and in sourcing new strategy ideas – expected focus on Private Real Estate, Infrastructure, and Natural Resources.
  • Perform ongoing monitoring of strategy performance/positioning, maintain internal and external sales/PM relationships, and communicate updated investment recommendations.
  • Contribute to broader FT Alternatives Research agenda through attending other due diligence meetings, sharing insights from past research relationships, performing peer reviews.
  • Maintains accurate and complete information of coverage in the team research database.

Collaboration

  • Communicates with Portfolio Managers, Portfolio Analysts, and others to ensure accurate application of Manager Research output 
  • Partner with Portfolio Managers to share investment outlook of underlying managers and ensure alignment of fund implementation options to asset allocation framework

Evolution of Research Process

  • Actively considers potential improvements to overall team efficiency and process
  • Executes research projects aimed at improvement of due diligence decisions and outcomes
  • Critiques methods and best practices learned through conferences, academic and industry publications, and other sources

What qualifications, skills and experience would help someone to be successful?

  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree with CFA Level II or CAIA completed, or equivalent relevant advanced degree
  • Experience working with an investment consulting firm or a large allocator (like a pension plan, foundation, or fund-of-fund)
  • Experience in manager selection and/or fund due diligence 
  • Understanding of fund due diligence in equity and fixed income; experienced in ESG investing principles
  • Great work ethic with a strong desire to learn
  • Strong interpersonal skills, ability to work in both a team and independent environment
  • Experience with Morningstar Direct a plus
  • Coding experience a plus (Excel VBA, R, Python)
